Our 2009 NCAA Football Predictions – Teams | Analysis | Previews Online

Coach: Dave Wannstedt
2008 Record: 9-4

In the fairly anemic Big East conference, Pitt stands as good a chance as anyone in bringing home a title.

Pitt Gambling Odds from Betus.com to win BCS: +7500

Former NFL coach Wannstedt has finally, after five seasons, navigated the program correctly. The schedule isn’t without challenges, but the Panthers and their fans may soon have something to smile about that isn’t reminsicing about Tony Dorsett and Dan Marino.Field general Bill Stull returns for his senior season and he’ll have vets to help him put points on the board. Tight end Nate Byham is a gem and the road graders possess experience and savvy.

Defensive end Greg Romeus should anchor the defense, a unit that sees a lot of patient seniors getting a crack at starting spots.

Team Strengths
New defensive coordinator Phil Bennett ran crack defenses at Kansas State and TCU in the last decade, and also brings head coaching experience from Southern Methodist. Rangy 6″5, 220 lb wideout Jonathan Baldwin should come down with everything that’s thrown his way.

Robb Houser and John Malecki, the tag team at C/RG, are crafty if undersized.

Team Weaknesses
Pitt loses dominant tailback LeSean McCoy to the big leagues. McCoy only broke the Big East freshman rushing record (1,328 yards in 2006) and carried the offensive load last season with 21 TDs.

The ‘backers also lose tackling aficionado Scott McKillop (137 tackles last year) and break in new faces on special teams.

Road games at Rutgers and West Virginia and a visit from Charlie Weis’ upstart Golden Domers present legitimate tests for a veteran Panthers team.

The Panthers meld talent with experience and though the offense will be shaped differently without McCoy, Pitt certainly could scrap for the conference crown.

2009 Pitt Panthers Record Prediction: 10-3
