Team records:
Northwestern: 8-4 SU, 5-6 ATS
Auburn: 7-5 SU, 6-5 ATS

Preview:

The new year is kicked off with a Big Ten-SEC clash in Tampa. Though Auburn has been a far cry from its magical 2004 unbeaten season, the offense can dominate in stretches.

The attack is paced by the efficient quarterbacking of Chris Todd and the prolific running game; a load shared by Ben Tate and freshman Onterio McCalebb. Auburn lands itself in the Top 15 in rushing offense and the Top 20 in scoring.

Northwestern’s spread attack, meanwhile, is led expertly by strong-armed senior QB Mike Kafka.

The Wildcats are riding some tremendous momentum, winning three successive games versus conference foes Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. Even with a victory, this won’t be the Wildcat faithful’s favorite January 1st bowl game in memory (that would be 1995’s Rose Bowl appearance) but this would still be an impressive upset against a talented SEC foe.

Being pragmatic, however, leads us to believe Auburn is explosive enough to emerge victorious from the Outback Bowl. Kafka should be able to deliver the ball to targets like Andrew Brewer and Zeke Markshausen, but Auburn can control the clock and still, as always, has its dynamic athletes on defense like Antonio Coleman and Craig Stevens.

Auburn’s strong offensive line should blow Northwestern off the ball and if Kafka makes any mistakes, Big Ten supporters will leave Raymond James Stadium crestfallen.

2009 Team Stats

Auburn is far more battle tested playing in the SEC than Northwestern’s Big 10 schedule. Auburn is just bigger, faster, and stronger than Northwestern and should be able to dictate the pace of play on both lines of scrimmage.
