Head coach Mack Brown is on the hot seat, and he needs a statement win in what could prove to be his last season on the Longhorns’ sideline.

Texas

Up to this point, the Texas Longhorns have disappointed.

Their offense has been mediocre, their defense has been bad and to make matters worse, Case McCoy has been forced to step in for David Ash. With McCoy in the game, expect the Longhorns to run the ball. They’ve been incredibly balanced this season between the run and the pass, but McCoy lacks the ability to make big plays downfield, and utilizing the ground game has to be a focus.

Defensively, it’s going to be extremely tough for Texas to outperform the Sooners. Oklahoma is giving up just 281 yards per game, which is good enough to place in the top 10, and Texas is the 16th-worst team in that category. What it can do, however, is put pressure on Blake Bell, as he had a successful game the last time these two met. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The key for the longhorns has to be getting off to a hot start. In the last three matchups between these two teams, Oklahoma has outscored Texas 91-19 in the first half. The Longhorns can’t afford to get down early this year, or else it could mean a long afternoon for the Texas faithful.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma enters this contest barely escaping a battle with TCU. The sooners won 20-17, but the three-point victory caused the team to drop one spot in the national rankings.

That said, this team has won this battle three straight season, and it is the favorite to keep the streak alive

The No. 1 key to victory for the Sooners is to avoid mental mistakes. They are the better team on both sides of the ball, and they have a chance to win and win big if they’re smart.

The problem is that this game is a big one in the eyes of everyone on the field (and in the stands), and a few mistakes here and there will give the Longhorns all the confidence they need to compete.

So long as the Sooners don’t turn the ball over, they should be in good shape. Their defense is allowing just 13 points per contest (sixth in the nation), and they should be able to hold Texas’ backup quarterback from start to finish. Both crowds will be in it from the beginning, but the ones in red should leave happier than the ones in burnt orange.

Score Prediction: Oklahoma 41 – Texas 24
