Coach: Mike Riley
2008 Record: 9-4

The team that has had a penchant for upsetting Southern Cal in recent seasons (2006, 2008) will certainly be in the upper half of the Pac-10 conference.

How far they’ll go after that is where the clouds of doubt creep in. The Beavers set a school record last year with seven players being drafted to the NFL; it’s impressive, but also hard not to feel that sting the following year. Still, Coach Riley has a few pieces in place that make it so OSU could pull another big upset or two.

Quarterback Lyle Moevao is 11-4 as a starter and is entrenched at the spot for his last season. Also intriguing on offense are the Rodgers brothers — tailback Jacquizz (who was a beast in last year’s win over USC) and wideout James. They, and perhaps JUCO transfer Reggie Dunn, will have to be playing well for the Beavers’ offense to be dynamic. On the other side of the ball there is some heavy attrition.

Second-leading tackler Keaton Kristick returns, but OSU loses leader Greg Laybourn and sackmaster Victor Butler (12 sacks last year).

Team Strengths
Moevao and ‘Quizz Rodgers is an excellent backfield. They will be assisted by some strong returners up front — C Alex Linnenkohl, RG Gregg Peat and LT Mike Remmers.

Kristick will lead the D and the Beavers should also be improved at stuffing the run in 2009.

Team Weaknesses
The ‘O’ loses its leading two receivers to the NFL; James Rodgers will have to really step up and feature. TE Howard Croom must get his production back up to a 2007 level (20 receptions in ’07, just six last season) and Oregon St will desperately have to find someone to rush the passer. There are upperclassmen in the secondary, but no returning starters among them.

Oregon State has two tremendously daunting tests in road games at USC and Cal, but other than that the schedule is fairly breathable.

Moevao and the Brothers Rodgers must form an offensive triumvirate of terror and some faces must emerge from the mists on defense.

Provided that happens, it could be another reasonably happy season in small-town Corvallis.

2009 Oregon St. Beavers Record Prediction: 8-5

Although last year was an exciting season. OSU will not be able to sneak up on unsuspecting teams as they did in 2008. The USC game will be interesting but I am sure the outcome will be different. However, don’t count the Beavs out against Cal even on the road.

It is an odd year so you can forget about another USC upset, you’ll have to wait for 2010. They are a good team, but there are a couple of teams like Cal and UCLA that I think are better. 8 wins seems to be on the mark for this team.
