The winner of Thursday’s contest will claim the Pac-10 title, and play Big Ten champion Ohio State in the Rose Bowl on New Years Day. Oregon has not been to the Rose Bowl since 1995, while the Beavers haven’t been since in 45 seasons.

The teams last met on Nov 29, 2008 when Oregon crushed the Beavers’ hopes of going to the Rose Bowl with a 65-38 victory; the highest-scoring game in the Civil War rivalry. Oregon leads Oregon State 56-46-10 in the series history.

This year’s contest has two of the Pac-10’s best running backs going head-to–head in a War for the Roses. Beavers’ running back Jacquizz Rodgers, who led the conference in rushing in 2008 and missed last years’ Civil War contest due to a shoulder injury suffered in the game against Arizona the week before, will make his Civil War debut against the Ducks’ tailback LaMichael James.

The 5-foot-9, 180 pound James was pressed into a more prominent role this year when starter LeGarrette Blount was suspended two games into the season. He is averaging 119.1 yards per game and has a total of 1,310 rushing yards, ranking him 10th in the nation and third in the Pac-10. The Beavs’ 5-foot-7, 191 pounds Jacquizz Rodgers has run for 1,313 total yards and 19 touchdowns this season. He’s also caught 67 passes for 436 yards and a score. And he’s even thrown a touchdown pass.

Oregon State has won four straight games. Quarterback Sean Canfield tossed a pair of touchdowns in a 42-10 win over Washington State in Week 12. Canfield, a fifth-year senior, has also never played in a Civil War. He’s completed 70 percent of his passes this season, and has been the main reason the Beavers lead the Pac-10 in passing with 272.5 yards per game. Defensively the OSU have just two starting seniors and are ranked 40th nationally, which may prove to be the weak link in Thursday’s game.

The Ducks are back on track since losing to Stanford on Nov 7, and have won two straight games. Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli ran for the winning touchdown in double overtime to give Oregon a 44-41 win over Arizona in Week 12. Masoli completed 26-of-45 for 283 yards with three touchdowns, while rushing for 62 yards and three touchdowns in the win. He has completed 154 of 264 passes for 1,865 yards, with 14 touchdowns and four interceptions for the season. He also has rushed 105 times for 619 yards and 12 scores. The Ducks have scored at least 42 points in all seven of Masoli’s starts. The Ducks are 27th nationally in total defense, yielding 324.0 yards per game, but will be without LB Josh Kaddu, and senior CBs Willie Glasper and Walter Thurmond, all out due to injury.

Can the Beavers’ defense do better this year against Oregon’s spread offense? OSU gave up 694 yards to the Ducks last season in a loss that knocked the Beavers out of the Rose Bowl bid. They need to contain the Ducks, and turn the wide plays back inside where they have a chance to slow down the Ducks offense.
