Pac 10 Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: OSU Beavers

Coach: Mike Riley
2009 Record: 8-5

Corvallis, Oregon: a small community to begin with. In 2010 it’s unquestionably Mr. Rodgerses’ (plural) neighborhood. Senior flanker James and junior tailback Jacquizz (’Quizzy) will be the rocket fuel for the attack.

Coach Riley has a respectable team otherwise with a couple of stars at select positions, yet the dominance of the brothers Rodgers will be intrinsic to a strong season for the Beavers and (they hope) a possible Rose Bowl berth.

Team Strengths:

Last year, James and ’Quizzy Rodgers were the top two in both rushing and receiving; these are two small, ultra-quick guys with soft hands. It creates a match-up nightmare for opponents, especially because the 2010 offensive line will be very solid.

Led by senior center Alex Linnenkohl and young stud tackle Michael Philipp (freshman All-American in ’09) the seams will be there for a Rodgers to explode.

Six-foot-one, 311-lb DT Stephen Paea eats people up front and he’ll be even more effective with a better season from senior DE Gabe Miller, a strong athlete initially recruited as a tight end.

Free safety Lance Mitchell can more than hold his own.

Team Weaknesses:

The Beavers lose their two leading tacklers from last year. Mike ’backer Rueben Robinson is pretty green and he must answer the bell in order to replace the production. Whoever the new QB is, be it sophomore Ryan Katz or junior transfer Peter Lalich, has a tall order replacing Sean Canfield.

It’s a good thing they’ll have a couple of Rodgers to bail them out.

2010-2011 OSU Football Prediction: 8-5

Oregon State must face mid-major beasts TCU and Boise State, and though they enjoy a glut of home games in 2010, anyone can beat anyone in the Pac-10. After the tests of TCU and Boise, Oct. 9 at Arizona will be a statement game.

Despite some talent (Paea is a sure-fire NFLer) and good coaching, the Beavers rely on two brothers altogether too roundly to bring home the conference bacon – especially with quarterback play that may be questionable.
