Pac 10 2010-2011 Football Previews: Oregon Ducks

Coach: Chip Kelly
2009 Record: 10-3

Oregon Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +1800

After a humbling loss to Boise State in the first week of 2009, Chip Kelly’s Ducks really pulled it together. They only lost one barn-burner to Stanford the rest of the regular season and narrowly came up short versus the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl. If former QB Jeremiah Masoli weren’t dismissed from the team, the Ducks would be regarded as one of the nation’s best in 2010.

Even still, Oregon is a truly solid squad from top to bottom.

The battle to replace Masoli will fall to senior Nate Costa and sophomore Darron Thomas.

What Costa brings in familiarity with the schemes, Thomas makes up for with explosiveness and he ought to win the starting job. Other than this speed-bump, the Ducks are well equipped to punch at their weight in the Pac-10.

Team Strengths:

Running back LaMichael James is electric and was the Pac-10 Player of the Year last season. His job is made somewhat easier because the O-line is stacked, with tackle Bo Thran and guard Carson York being the stand-outs. The defense has plenty of returners, including safety John Boyett and LB Casey Matthews, part of the fabled Matthews football family dynasty.

If that weren’t enough, WR Jeff Maehl gets it done catching the pigskin and senior DE Kenny Rowe had 11.5 sacks last season.

Yes, the Ducks can hurt you in various different ways.

Team Weaknesses:

Masoli was a cornerstone and it was really a blow to lose him to something stupid like a burglary charge. Veteran TE Ed Dickson moved on to greener pastures (read: the NFL) and JUCO Brandon Williams will try to replace his steady production.

Kelly needs to ensure there are no mental breakdowns like last season, when RB LeGarrette Blount got suspended after Week 1 for punching a Broncos player.

2010-2011 Oregon Football Prediction: 12-2

It’s hard to bet against a well-rounded team like the Ducks, and if they had their starting pivot from ’09, Oregon would probably be the best team in the Pac-10. As it currently stands, it will be in a dogfight in a harrowing conference.

Make sure to tune in on Oct. 30 at USC, it should be a classic.
