Preview:

Few experts would have predicted these two teams meeting in a BCS bowl at the beginning of the season, but zany things happen (as they do every season) and hence we have our combatants for the Orange Bowl. This match-up should come down to the running game.

The Yellow Jackets specialize in it, with coach Paul Johnson’s triple option attack he brought over from Navy a couple seasons ago. The Jackets were second in the nation in rushing, averaging over 300 ypg. Tailback Jonathan Dwyer averaged 104 ypg in 2009; QB Josh Nesbitt chipped in with 76.

Iowa has a strong defense, but its specialty is being ball-hawking and tenacious in the passing game. The Hawkeyes won’t see a lot of throws tonight, so the lineman will have to get off their blocks and linebackers like Pat Angerer and A.J. Edds must excel going sideline-to-sideline to snuff out ballcarriers.

Defensive back Tyler Sash had an excellent year with six INTs, but he’ll have to focus more on bleeding down into the box to help mitigate Tech’s calculated ground attack. The Hawkeye offense won’t dump points on you, so QB Ricky Stanzi, who has missed the past two games with injury, must have a strong day to tie everything together. He’ll have to be alert for Tech DE Derrick Morgan, who averaged nearly a sack per game this season and is as hungry and talented as they come. A lot of people overlook the Big Ten conference lately, but it is a very balanced outfit and Iowa beat some tough opponents.

An Iowa win tonight would go lengths to cementing the conference’s reputation.

Though opponents know exactly what they are getting when Georgia Tech comes into town, they still aren’t able to stop it.

If Iowa cannot be the exception to the rule, expect the Yellow Jackets to come away with an Orange Bowl victory tonight in Miami.

One reply on “Orange Bowl: Hawkeyes vs. Yellow Jackets Predictions”

This game comes down to Georgia Tech’s offense, most notably their running game against Iowa’s defense as these are two of the best units in college football.

I like the Yellow Jackets in a close one.
