SEC Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Ole Miss Rebels

Coach: Houston Nutt
2009 Record: 9-4

Ole Miss Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +30000

The University of Mississippi was everybody’s sexy pick for BCS success in 2009. However, Coach Nutt and Ole Miss seem to prefer chasing those wearing the targets rather than wearing one itself. The Rebs’ 9-4 finish was fairly pedestrian compared to what experts thought they were capable of.

Last year’s quarterback Jevan Snead did not play as well as expected and the Rebs came up short in games they should have had, notably versus in-state rival Mississippi State in the final game of the regular season.

Yet, this year Ole Miss is back under the radar, and the potential Oregon transfer pivot Jeremiah Masoli offers is indeed enticing. Can the Rebels make some noise in the heralded SEC in 2010?

Team Strengths:

If Masoli wins the starting job and can keep his nose clean (his history at Oregon is riddled with transgressions) he offers a massive upgrade over any other QB on Ole Miss’ roster and perhaps over the 2009 version of Snead. He is versatile and athletic and played great for the Ducks.

The Rebs have a couple of intriguing athletic marvels at WR for Masoli (or sophomore Nathan Stanley) to throw to in senior Markeith Summers (6”3, 205 lbs) and sophomore Pat Patterson (6”2, 215 lbs).

Ole Miss also has a solid defensive line anchored by DE Kentrell Lockett and nose tackle Jerrell Powe, who finally became academically eligible in 2009 and could put his prodigious football talents to use.

Team Weaknesses:

Ole Miss loses a lot from its “can’t-miss” 2009 squad. Gone is Snead, do-everything RB Dexter McCluster and leading receiver Shay Hodge. The Rebs also break in two new average Joes at the starting CB spots, with Charles Sawyer and senior Jeremy McGee, a UCLA transfer. There are also three new faces on the offensive line, though they are mostly upperclassmen.

Mississippi’s offense doesn’t invoke a lot of fear in opponents if Masoli isn’t under center.

2010-2011 Ole Miss Football Prediction: 8-5

It is entirely plausible the Rebels start the season 5-0. The trouble comes when they travel to Tuscaloosa to face the Crimson Tide on Oct. 16. Ole Miss could drop three in a row to ’Bama, Arkansas and Auburn; the latter half of the Rebs’ schedule is indeed daunting.

However, Nutt is a great coach and he can get his players up for games.

Ole Miss should make a bowl, but it would be a bit surprising to see it match or surpass its 2009 record.
