Big 12 2010-2011 Football Previews: Oklahoma St. Cowboys

Coach: Mike Gundy
2009 Record: 9-4

Oklahoma State Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +30000

The Cowboys of Oklahoma State had extremely high expectations in 2009, and they certainly feel short reaching them. For coach Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State team in 2010 it will be an interesting year with a lot of fresh faces. The expectations won’t be nearly as high, but the schedule is that difficult, so they’ll need to get to a bowl game to have a successful season.

The biggest change will be the absence of Zac Robinson at quarterback. Robinson had led the offense for most of his four year career and was a solid leader in the huddle.

The Cowboys high powered offense will need to find new players to plug into key positions to keep things rolling along. Sportsbook.com

Team Strengths:

Kendall Hunter is a great talent in the backfield. I fully expect him to do some major damage this year in the Big 12. He isn’t a big guy, but he is extremely shifty and he will make a ton of people miss.

While some may be worried about the wide receiver position, I think the Cowboys will be solid there. Hubert Anyiam came on in a big way toward the end of last season and sophomore Justin Blackmon has the skills to be a very good one as well.

The defensive ends are a position of strength as both Ugo Chinasa and Jamie Blatnick have what it takes to disrupt the opposing offense on a consistent basis.

Team Weaknesses:

The offensive line is a big concern at Oklahoma State this year. They have been pretty good in the last few years, but they return only one starter from 2009. The new quarterback will need solid protection or this offense will struggle.

The linebackers have a lot of question marks. Orie Lemon is a great player, but no one knows how healthy he will be. The rest of the linebackers are pretty inexperienced and they may take some time to mature.

While the defensive ends are solid, there is a big question mark in the middle of their defensive line. This is a team that could struggle to stop the run if they can’t find someone to clog up the running lanes.

2010-2011 Oklahoma St. Football Prediction: 8-5

This Oklahoma State won’t be as dangerous as last year’s team, at least when the season begins. I do think that there is quite a bit of talent on this team and they are likely to be a much more dangerous team by the end of the season. The out of conference schedule is as easy as you will find, and they have a good shot to start the season at 5-0.

The key games on this schedule could be the trips to Kansas State and Kansas.

The Cowboys will need to win at least one of those if they wish to duplicate last year’s nine wins. This will be an interesting team to keep an eye on this year.
