Northwestern

The Northwestern Wildcats had a golden opportunity to win a game on a big stage last weekend, but they stumbled down the stretch and allowed Michigan State to stay undefeated. Pat Fitzgerald’s team plays hard and they are usually in just about every game, but they don’t have the talent of the top squads in the conference.

Dan Persa has done a tremendous job leading this offense so far this season. Persa is the Wildcats leading passer and rusher. He has thrown just three interceptions and the team is ranked 25th in the nation in passing yards per game. Northwestern has an offense that uses short passes to keep the defense off balance. Persa’s ability to keep the play alive is crucial to this unit’s success. In order to improve as on offense, they must develop a running back to take some of the load off Persa.

The Northwestern defense hasn’t been terrific, but they do keep their team in the game. They are fairly good against the run, but they have struggled against solid passing teams. One of the main reasons they have been able to minimize the damage is they only allow opponents to convert on 30.4% of their third down conversion attempts. The front four often struggles to get heat on the quarterback, which puts more pressure on their inexperienced secondary.

Indiana

The Indiana Hoosiers are on a path similar to the one they have been on for the last few years. Indiana storms out of the gates against weak non-conference opponents and then gets beat up in the Big Ten conference season. Can they get things turned around this week?

The Indiana offense has not been the problem. This is one of the more productive offenses in the conference. The Hoosiers are averaging 314 yards per game through the air, and they are putting up 31 points per game. Quarterback Ben Chappell is the leader of this offense, and he is very efficient in the passing game. Chappell already had 2,137 yards and 17 touchdowns on the year. He only has 17 touchdowns all of last season, so the senior is certainly developing nicely in the offense. Indiana probably has the best trio of receivers in the Big Ten. Tandon Doss, Terrance Turner, and DeMarlo Belcher are all three very reliable targets on the outside. The one thing this offense lacks is a reliable running back to keep defenses honest.

The Hoosiers defense is one of the worst in the nation, and they have held this team back in a big way this year. The defense allows 31 points per game, and they have given up just over 40 points per game in Big Ten conference action. The pass defense is bad, and the rushing defense is terrible as well. There really isn’t any way to put a positive spin on this defense, because they have just been obliterated all year long.

The Pick:

The Northwestern Wildcats aren’t that talented, but they do tend to play more disciplined than Indiana. Indiana will likely be able to rack up the points against this Northwestern defense, and Indiana’s defense hasn’t been capable of stopping anyone of late. I like the over in this one.

Northwestern vs. Indiana Score Prediction: Northwestern 35 Indiana 31
