(16) Florida State Seminoles (6-1)

Florida State’s winning streak is now five games long but it almost fell apart last week. Brimming with confidence after throttling Miami on October 9, the Seminoles were huge favorites at home to Boston College. They got the win but narrowly escaped with a 24-19 margin, failing to cover the spread by a long shot.

Against a solid Eagles defense, Christian Ponder made a lot of mistakes last week, throwing three interceptions. Florida State actually trailed until early in the fourth quarter when Bert Reed broke a 42-yard touchdown run.

Should bettors worry this week? Florida State looked shaky in Week 8 and hasn’t beaten the spread in its last nine tries against N.C. State. Then again, last week may have been an anomaly against a strong defense. Florida State’s 24 points were its lowest total since it lost to Oklahoma in its second game. While Ponder had a rough day, he was roiling before that, having thrown six touchdown passes and one interception in his previous four games.

The Seminoles also continue to play outstanding defense. They’ve allowed 20 points or more in a game just once all season and rank in the top 20 for almost every major defensive category. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

N.C. State Wolfpack (5-2)

N.C. State knows its home showdown is a crucial one for its ACC title hopes, especially after its disappointing loss to East Carolina last week.

The Wolfpack are better equipped than most to push the Florida State defense. They have the country’s seventh-ranked passing offense, averaging 312.6 yards per game. Russell Wilson brings a gunslinger mentality to the field every week and has 18 touchdown passes on the year.

However, just as we saw with Ponder, Wilson raised some red flags last week. He was the goat in the Wolfpack’s loss, throwing three interceptions. He now has nine picks on the year and has completed just 57.8 per cent of his passes.

The Wolfpack’s running game also leaves a bit to be desired; it ranks eighth in the ACC and doesn’t have a single back averaging five or more yards per carry.

Defensively, N.C. State isn’t horrible, but it isn’t Boston College, either. The Wolfpack can be beaten; East Carolina passed for 376 yards against them last week and Virginia Tech gashed them for 317 rushing yards on October 2.

The pick:

On one hand, N.C. State poses a greater offensive threat to FSU than Boston College did last week. On the other, its defense is definitely weaker. I like Ponder to bounce back in a big way and exploit the Wolfpack’s holes this week. Also, as much as Wilson can take the Wolfpack downfield, his mistake-prone ways may bite him against an elite defense this week.

If N.C. State hasn’t been fully exposed as a pretender yet, it’ll happen this Thursday night.

Florida State vs N.C. State prediction: Florida State 30, N.C. State 17
