Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Texas A&M Aggies Preview

In a Big 12 match up between a couple of teams that are both 4-3 the Texas A&M Aggies host the Texas Tech Red Raiders. College football lines have Texas A&M as 6.5-point favorites with a total that has not been posted at time of writing.

The Aggies stopped the bleeding with their recent win, as they had lost their previous 3 games. They are only 1-2 in the Big 12 and in the basement of the South Division and they need to start winning to get a bowl bid. However, that will be far from easy, as in their last 4 games they face 3 teams that are ranked in the top 25 and the one team not ranked is Texas, who the Aggies face on the road.

Texas Tech is also coming off a win and they are in 2nd to last place in the Big 12 South Division. After facing A&M Tech has 2 games against 2 teams ranked in the top 10 in the nation in Missouri and Oklahoma.

The Red Raiders may have a little revenge on their minds, as the Aggies beat them in their house last season 52-30.

This season Texas Tech is 2-4-1 ATS and Texas A&M is 3-4 ATS. The Aggies are at home in this big game and in the last 11 meetings between these 2 teams the home team has covered the spread 8 times.

In their last games Texas A&M beat Kansas 45-10 and Texas Tech beat Colorado 27-24.

This game may be a barnburner, as both teams rank in the top 10 in the nation in passing yards per game and neither has a good pass defense. Not a good pass D may be a tad of an understatement for the Red Raiders, as they rank 119th out of 120 FBS teams and the Aggies rank 85th.

QB Jerrod Johnson, who only passed for 139 yards in the blowout win over Kansas because he was taken out in the 2nd quarter because the game was not close, leads the Texas A&M offense. The WR duo of Jeff Fuller and Ryan Swope will be a handful for the weak Tech secondary to cover and Johnson will likely put up big numbers. He will have to be careful with the ball, as even though the Red Raiders do not have a good pass D Johnson has 9 INT this season.

The Aggies are not a one-dimensional team on offense with the nation’s 49th ranked rushing offense. Christine Michael is the featured back and he has rushed for 592 yards and 4 TD this season and his backup Cyrus Gray (312 yards 3 TD) rushed for 117 yards in the easy win over Kansas. Tech has a decent run defense and last week against Colorado they only gave up 28 yards on the ground. They will have to stuff the run again, as if the Aggies can move the chains in the air AND on the ground the Red Raiders will be toast. In an interesting betting trend Texas Tech is 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game.

QB Taylor Potts is the big gun for the Texas Tech offense and he ranks 5th in the nation in passing yards. He will be counted on to have a good game, as the Red Raiders’ rushing offense only ranks 94th in the nation and Texas A&M has a great run defense ranking 10th in the nation. If the Aggies can play decent defending the pass they will be in good shape, as Potts will really have to lead Tech in a high scoring game for them to pull off the upset.

Both QB’s will put up big numbers in this game, but the Aggies can run the ball and that will be the key. The more they are successful running, which they will be this Saturday, the more Potts and the dynamic Red Raiders’ passing attack will be on the sidelines and it is tough to score when your offense is not on the field. The Aggies will win this game and cover the spread improving their chances of playing in a bowl game.

Betting Trends

Texas Tech is 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games, 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games as a road underdog, and has an Under record of 5-2 in their last 7 road games.
Texas A&M is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as a home favorite, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games, and has an Under record of 10-4 in Aggies last 14 games as a home favorite.
In the last 5 games between these 2 teams the total has gone Over 4 times.

Pick: Texas A&M -6.5
