Rice vs. Houston Free Week 9 Preview & Pick (Oct. 27)

Rice Owls vs Houston Cougars Gambling + Handicapping

The Rice Owls are in a tough spot on Thursday night.  They have lost their last two games and are out of it in Conference USA.  Last year they jumped up and bit the Cougars at home but the last time they visited Houston they gave up a whopping 73 points, losing by 59.

Rice

The best they can hope for is that Houston is looking past Rice as they continue to hunt down a perfect season.

The Owls are a classic bad team, bad on offense and bad on defense.  They were hoping that sophomore QB Taylor McHargue would take a big step forward with the starting job this year but it hasn’t happened – he is completing a lower percentage of passes and turning the ball over more often.  Against Houston they are going to be playing a lot of catchup and he doesn’t inspire confidence.

It has been more than a decade since Rice won at Houston.  Looking at the line there is not much hope for an upset on Thursday night no matter how inspired they may be by the ESPN cameras (maybe Jenn Brown will show up).  There should be a lot of points scored so if you think Rice is going to contribute than take the over, its never a bad play when Houston is involved. Houston

A couple of unbeatens bit the dust but the Houston Cougars are still perfect at 7-0.  It wasn’t a fantastic defensive effort last week but when you score 63 points you are not going to lose too many games.  They are in the soft part of their schedule right now so they have to keep it tight.  Odds are they can run this thing up to double digits before a couple of big games to close out the season.

QB Case Keenum is assaulting the record book and it won’t be long before such college luminaries as Timmy Chang and Graham Harrell are just footnotes.  He is directing the #1 attack in the nation and should have little trouble slicing through the Rice defense.  With every win he is inching up the Heisman ballot too and just might get the invite to NYC if the team continues to back him up.

This is another big number for Houston at -27.5.  We all know the Cougars can score so that number is definitely reasonable although I am not sure there is much value there.  Houston has been a solid play for investors all season long with an ATS record of 5-2.   They are 5-2 on overs too so you can play that side as well.  70.5 is a lot of points but it isn’t even their highest total of the season (74.5 two weeks ago against ECU – which went under as the Pirates did not hold up their end of the bargain losing 56-3).

ATS Pick:  Houston -27.5
Over/Under Pick:  Over
Score Prediction:  Houston 55 – Rice 21
