Wake Forest Demon Deacons (2-5)

How many more beatings can Wake Forest take? The Demon Deacons have been the ACC’s whipping boy since winning their first two games, dropping five straight. They’re 1-5 within their conference and took a particularly bad beating last week against Virginia Tech, losing 52-21.

Scoring isn’t Wake Forest’s problem. The Demon Deacons actually average 28.4 points and 356.3 total yards of offense per game. They’re especially strong running the ball, averaging 200-plus yards per contest. Josh Harris has done a solid job in the backfield, averaging 6.8 yards per carry. He went off for 241 rushing yards and two scores in Wake Forest’s loss to Virginia Tech. Passing the ball is another story, however. Tanner Price has struggled under center. He’s completed just 53.6 per cent of his passes and was awful last week against Virginia Tech last week, going 3 of 16 for 92 yards.

Still, offense hasn’t been the real problem for Wake Forest this season. The Demon Deacons’ defense has been a train wreck. They allow 37.7 points and 454.4 total yards per game. Last week, Virginia Tech lit them up for 605 total yards. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Maryland Terrapins (5-2)

Maryland hasn’t been perfect this season but it’s found a way to win. Defensively, the Terps are a solid if unspectacular 44th in the nation. They did a solid job bottling up Boston College last week, holding the Eagles to 285 total yards and picking off two passes.

Offensively, Maryland has been just average, but there’s reason for optimism going forward. Danny O’Brien is settling into the starting quarterback role. He followed up a three-pick performance against Clemson in Week 7 with three touchdowns, bringing his total to nine on the year.

The pick:

Am I missing something here?  A 5-2 team at home against one of the nation’s worst defenses? I’m surprised Maryland isn’t favored by more than five and a half points. The Terrapins’ offense isn’t particularly dangerous but it seems like any team can move the ball on Wake Forest.

The Demon Deacons’ offense will challenge Maryland more than Boston College’s anemic unit did, so this game could actually creep over the betting total. In the end, I think the team with some semblance of a defense wins out.

Wake Forest vs Maryland prediction: Maryland 31, Wake Forest 21
