Houston
They may not be having the season they thought they hoped but Houston is alive in the conference race after last week’s upset of SMU. There are a couple of teams nipping at their heels though so they can not afford a slip like the one they had at Rice a couple of weeks ago. This is their third week in a row on the road so they need to stay focused even though Memphis is a weak opponent.
The Cougars upset SMU on the road last week but they didn’t use their usual formula. Instead of passing for a zillion yards they emphasized the run game, racking up more than 160 yards on the ground and 4 TDs. They also were able to capitalize on defense forcing multiple turnovers. I don’t think coach Sumlin is changing his approach but it is a sign of the strength of the program how they won last week.
Houston has been the winner of the last two against the Tigers but their last trip to Memphis yielded only a 3 point victory. Also, Memphis is 5-2 against the spread against the Cougars so there is something about this game that inspires the Tigers. Houston shouldn’t have a problem winning this one but we were saying the same thing two weeks ago when they rolled into Rice, but that was more of a rivalry game.
Memphis
Memphis is one of the worst teams in the FBS. 
They have only one win on the season against a Dasher-less MTSU squad and every loss but one has been by a minimum of 22 points. They are unlikely to win another game all season and lack much in the way of material to scare an opponent the calibre of Houston…but on any given Saturday, right?
Memphis’ problem is everything. They are one of the lowest scoring teams in the nation and nearly give up the most points. They neither run or pass well and don’t even connect on their FG attempts with any degree of regularity. The only bright spot this year has been QB Ryan Williams. Just a freshman, he is taking his lumps like a man and might mature into a quality player down the road.
In the past Memphis has had a strong running game which has kept the Cougars high powered offense off the field. That isn’t the case this year which means that even though the spread is only 14 this one could be ugly. If Case Keenum were starting for the Cougars it might have been double what it is. In this one I think it won’t matter and the Cougars will maul the Tigers.
The Pick: Houston rolls in this one as their passing game gets back on track. Memphis fans look forward to hoops season for some payback.
