Purdue
The Purdue Boilermakers started 2-0 in the Big Ten, but they were humbled last weekend in Columbus. Purdue was manhandled 49-0 by the Buckeyes. This team is dealing with more injuries than any other team in the Big Ten right now, so I expect the rest of the year to be difficult.
The Purdue offense has been hit hardest by the injury bug this year. Freshman Rob Henry has been thrust into the starting quarterback position, and he has a lack of weapons around him. The wide receiving corps is extremely raw and inexperienced and the running backs are unproven. Henry is a solid runner himself, but he has yet to show that he can consistently air it out successfully. This offense simply isn’t capable of producing long drives right now, so they need to hope they can bust a big play occasionally.
The Boilermakers defense is great at rushing the passer, but they are extremely weak in the secondary. Purdue has 19 sacks in just seven games, but they are allowing opponents to convert on 46.5% of their third down conversion attempts. In addition, the Purdue defense lacks a veteran leader in the secondary. The star of this unit is Ryan Kerrigan, who is a great defensive end. Kerrigan now has 27.5 sacks in his career at Purdue. 
Illinois
The Illinois Fighting Illini are 4-3 and 2-2 in the Big Ten Conference this season. Ron Zook’s team has been more competitive than most people thought, primarily due to the improved play of the defense.
The Fighting Illini have an impressive freshman quarterback in Nathan Scheelhaase. Scheelhaase is still making freshman mistakes, but he shows a great deal of potential. Mikel LeShoure has carried the load on the ground this year, and he has done a great job. LeShoure is averaging 5.3 yards per carry and he has 766 yards already this year. A.J. Jenkins and Jarred Fayson are two solid receivers, but Illinois is a little thin at the wide receiver spot after those two. This is an offense that has room to improve, but they are full of young talent.
The Illinois defense has been tremendous this year. The Fighting Illini rank 19th in the nation in total defense and 15th in the nation in points allowed per game. Martez Wilson is healthy again this year, and he is a real leader on this unit. Cory Liuget is the leader on the defensive line, and this line has proven difficult to run the football against. This is a unit that has come together much more quickly than many expected they would.
The Pick:
The Fighting Illini are much better than I expected them to be, but I still can’t lay 17 points on them. The Boilermakers showed last week they have a long ways to go as a football team. Purdue will likely struggle in a big way to score in this game, so I think the best play on the board is the under.
