No. 22 Kansas State Wildcats vs. Baylor Bears Preview

Kansas State (5-1) is back in the top 25 and to stay there they will have to beat Baylor (5-2) in a tough Big 12 away game this Saturday afternoon. College football lines have Baylor as 6-point favorites in this game with a total of 59.

The reasons oddsmakers have Baylor as favorites is that the Bears have a great offense led by an electrifying QB, they are at home, and Kansas State only has the nation’s 81st ranked defense. Also, in Kansas State’s 5 wins they have faced only one team that has a winning record and in their only game facing a ranked opponent they were killed. However, Baylor also has 5 wins and they are only 1-1 against teams that currently have a winning record and that one win was their season opener against Sam Houston State.

Kansas State comes into this game with confidence since they killed in-state rival Kansas in their last game 59-7 and Baylor also won their last game beating Colorado 31-25.

Baylor has a legit chance to have their first winning season since joining the Big 12 in the mid 90’s, but it will not be easy since in their 5 remaining games they face 4 Big 12 foes that are currently ranked in the top 25.

Kansas State also has it tough, as after Baylor they face three ranked teams in a row.

This game is Huge for each team, as the winner will have 6 wins and already be bowl eligible.

Heading into this Big 12 match up Baylor is 4-3 ATS this season and Kansas State is 3-3 ATS.

In an interesting betting trend that points to a Baylor ATS win KSU is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games as an underdog of 3.5-10 and Baylor is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10.

Baylor and their 13th ranked passing offense is led by QB Robert Griffin, who is a threat with his arm and his legs and in last week’s game against Colorado he passed for 234 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT and he also rushed for 137 yards. He ranks 4th in the nation in total yards per game and he will be hard to contain.

The KSU defense is totally Jekyll and Hyde, as they rank 12th in the nation in pass defense and 115th in the nation in rushing defense. With the legit secondary that Kansas State has Baylor will look to establish the run with Griffin and RB Jay Finley, who rushed for 143 yards last week. If the Wildcats cannot keep these 2 from picking up big yards in this game they will be in trouble, big time. In their one loss on the season to Nebraska they gave up 451 rushing yards.

For Kansas State to win they will have to run the ball and while they rank 13th in the nation in rushing yards per game they only rank 102nd in passing yards per game. RB Daniel Thomas ranks 8th in the nation in rushing yards per game (130.33), however teams have keyed on him lately, as in the first 3 games of the season he racked up 552 yards and in the last 3 games he only has 230 yards and has not cracked the 100 yard barrier. He will get back on track in this game against a Baylor rushing defense that ranks 72nd in the nation. If Baylor can keep Thomas under 100 yards they will win this game.

Wildcats’ Carson Coffman is a decent QB, but he will not be able to get into shootout, as he does not have the weapons at the WR position. He has not passed for over 200 yards in any game this season.

Kansas State is a good team, but not good enough to be ranked and they will not be able to contain Griffin and the Baylor rushing attack. Look for Baylor to pile up the yards on the ground and to easily win this game and cover the 6-point spread.

Betting Trends:

Kansas State is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 Big 12 games, 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games as a road underdog, and has an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 games facing a team with a winning record.
Baylor is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as a favorite, 11-5 in their last 16 Big 12 games, and has an Over record of 11-3 in their last 14 games as a home favorite.

Pick: Baylor -6
