After an ugly NCAA probe and an equally ugly 0-2 start thanks to a depleted roster, the North Carolina Tar Heels have rebounded in a big way, rattling off four consecutive victories. Quarterback T.J. Yates has been the model of efficiency, completing 66.5 per cent of his passes for 11 touchdowns and just one interception in six games.

He’ll have a tough test this week against the aggressive, athletic Miami defense, especially since he just lost his top target. Tight end Zack Pianalto, the team’s leading receiver, suffered a season-ending injury. However, junior wideout Dwight Jones really stepped up last week, catching seven balls for 198 yards and two touchdowns, so maybe UNC’s passing attack will be OK after all.

On the other side of the ball, the Tar Heels’ pass defense has done a great job ball hawking of late. They’ve intercepted 10 passes in their last four games and rank second only to Miami’s pass defense in the ACC. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

(25) Miami Hurricanes (4-2)

The Hurricanes were considered darkhorse BCS contenders at the start of 2010 and, while they’ve lost twice, they’ve held their own against a very tough schedule.

Unfortunately, their quarterback is hurting them. Jacory Harris is a talented passer and was supposed to be a Heisman Trophy candidate this year but he makes far too many mistakes. He has 11 touchdown passes but has thrown nine interceptions in six games. In the Hurricanes’ last big rivalry game, he completed just 40 per cent of his passes for no touchdowns and a pick in a 45-17 home loss to Florida State.

The pick:

This is an interesting matchup in that both teams defend the pass quite well and supposedly both lean on their quarterback for success. But the truth is that T.J. Yates is simply a better decision maker than Harris. He has a touch matchup, sure, but so does Harris. We’ve seen Harris make mistakes before against strong pass defenses and I think he’ll make more this Saturday.

Even though Damien Berry has been a bright spot in Miami’s backfield, it won’t matter if the Hurricanes fall behind because of turnovers and have to play catchup. The Tar Heels have really gelled together in the face of adversity and I like them to pull off the road upset this weekend.

With both defenses likely to make life miserable for the opposing quarterbacks, I see this game falling UNDER the sportsbook total of 48 points.
