Temple

The Owls narrowly edged Bowling Green last week by a point.  It was a key win because the Owls already have one conference loss and another would put them two back of surprise East Division leader Miami of Ohio.  Temple is considered by most to be the best team in the MAC but they haven’t been playing like it lately.  Now that RB Bernard Pierce is fully healthy they can start their run.

Temple should throttle Buffalo.  When Pierce was hurt they discovered that this Matt Brown guy is pretty good so now that Pierce is back they have the best running back tandem in the MAC.  They are the ideal Thunder and Lightning combo and both should finish the season with over 1000 yards and 10 TDs each.  It is going to be tough for Buffalo to stop either of them.

The Owls had had their problems with Buffalo until last year when they spanked them 37-13.  That victory signaled a changing of the guard in the conference as Buffalo was knocked from their perch on top with Temple replacing them.  The Bulls will definitely want revenge but are not talented enough to exact it this season…and perhaps for some time.

Buffalo

It looks like Turner Gill left at just the right moment.  He invigorated the program leading them to a MAC championship a couple of years ago but left knowing the cupboard was a little bare this season.  The Bulls have only one FBS win this year and all of their losses, both in conference and out, have been by a minimum of 14 points.  What was once a scrappy team with hidden NFL talent is now nothing more than a MAC doormat.  It seems like teams in the MAC can never sustain any dominance.

Based on the numbers the Bulls should be better than they are.  Their offense is able to move the ball but they are unable to punch it into the end zone.  When you look at their defense their yardage statistics are pretty good (top 50) but they are 87th in points allowed.  It also isn’t helping that QB Jerry Smith has thrown it to the other guys 12 times already.  That is second worst in FBS but they really don’t have anyone else to throw in there.

If the Bulls want to win on Saturday they are going to have to play a clean football game.  Temple is not going to to anything fancy they are just going to dare Buffalo to stop them.  In last year’s loss they actually outgained the Owls but were undone by 4 interceptions from then QB Zack Maynard.  That sounds like the blueprint for the Bulls season this year as well, but it is not one for success.

The Pick: Temple should be able to pound the Bulls into submission.  Covering the TD spread shouldn’t be much of an issue unless they really let up late.
