Before the season I had pegged Penn State as the team who I believed was most overrated in the Big Ten. Thus far they are even a little worse than I expected. Can Joe Paterno get this team moving in the right direction?
The Nittany Lions offense is probably the worst in the Big Ten so far this year. Everyone knew that true freshman quarterback Rob Bolden would need some time to get accustomed to the college game, but the running game has been extremely disappointing. Senior Evan Royster has had the worst year of his career and this team is averaging just 126 yards per game on the ground. For Royster to only have 388 yards rushing going into the seventh game of the year is a sign this offense has struggled mightily. The line must improve quickly, and Penn State has to start running the football effectively.
The Penn State defense has done their job well in 2010. They are only allowing 18 points per game, and they rank 26th in the nation in total defense. If there is one part of the game where this defense must improve it is definitely in their pass rush.
They have just eight sacks so far this year, which is putting a lot of pressure on their secondary. 
Minnesota
Tim Brewster became the first college football coach to be fired this year after last week’s loss at Purdue. Brewster went just 15-30 at Minnesota and just 6-21 in the Big Ten Conference. Jeff Horton is interim coach. Can the Gophers get their act together this year? They have a lot of room for improvement.
The Minnesota offense has improved a bit from a year ago, but that isn’t saying too much. Adam Weber has had a fairly efficient campaign at the quarterback spot, but the running game is still struggling. McKnight, Lair, and Gray form a nice trio at the wide receiver spot for the Gophers. The offensive line isn’t up to par, and they seem to miss assignments quite frequently. This offense must get more consistent and convert on more of their opportunities.
The Golden Gophers defense was solid last year, but they have been bad in 2010. The front seven get dominated off the ball and they are allowing 201 yards per game on the ground this year. This unit is giving up 32 points per game, and they have allowed at least 28 points in each of their last six contests. The Nittany Lions offensive line has struggled, but can Minnesota stop the run against anyone? This weekend will likely answer that question.
The Pick:
This is a unique game where Minnesota might be fired up to prove a point, but they are just aren’t very good. At the same time, Penn State isn’t nearly the team they have been over the last few years. I think the under is probably the best play on the board, because both teams struggle to put the ball in the end zone consistently.
