No. 16 Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. No. 14 Oklahoma State Cowboys Preview

The 16th ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-1) are coming off a pretty shocking home loss while 14th ranked Oklahoma State (6-0) has yet to lose this season and look to stay that way hosting the Huskers this Saturday. College football betting lines have Nebraska as 5.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 60.5.

I guess there’s no place like home? Well, not for Nebraska, who have won 7 straight on the road and in those games have only committed 6 turnovers. However, at home they are only 5-3 and have committed 13 turnovers in the span where they have won 7 straight road games.

Oklahoma State has won 6 straight at home and in the last 19 games at home they are 16-3 with 2 of those losses coming to teams that are ranked in the top 25. The Cowboys are tied atop the Big 12 with Oklahoma and in their last 6 games, starting this Saturday, they face 4 Big 12 teams that are ranked including facing Oklahoma in their season finale.

This game features the Huskers and their 9th ranked defense against the Cowboys and their offense, which ranks 2nd in the nation in total yards per game and 2nd in points scored. Oklahoma State only has the nation’s 92nd ranked defense, but last week they played well in holding a high-scoring Texas Tech team to only 17 points.

Nebraska has lost 3 of their last 4 games against Oklahoma including the last 2.

Even though they have not faced a ranked team until this game OSU is 5-1 ATS this season and Nebraska has only covered the spread one time in their last 5 meetings with the Cowboys.

Nebraska is only 2-3-1 ATS this season, but they are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games.

In their last games Nebraska lost to 20-13 while Oklahoma State beat Texas Tech 34-17.

The reason Nebraska lost last week was that Texas thwarted their rushing attack, which ranks 4ht in the nation. Duel threat QB Taylor Martinez came into the game averaging 147 rushing yards and against Texas he rushed for 21 yards on 13 carries and only passed for 63 yards. He was yanked in the game, but will start in this one and he has to get back on track. Martinez may air it out more in this game and will likely be successful doing it facing an Cowboys’ pass D that only ranks 114th in the nation.

Nebraska RB Roy Helu Jr also had a bad game last week rushing for only 43 yards averaging 3.9 yards per carry. The Huskers need to get back to running the ball well, but they will be facing the strength of the OSU defense, which is their rushing defense. However, the Oklahoma State rushing defense has not been tested that much since they have faced 3 teams this season that rank in the top 11th in the nation in passing offense. I mean, they gave up 175 rushing yards to Texas Tech, who only rank 95th in the nation in rushing offense.

The Cowboys are led by QB Brandon Weeden, who ranks 2nd in the nation averaging 327.7 passing yards per game and his main target it WR Justin Blackmon, who leads the nation averaging 159.2 receiving yards per game. These 2 will be a handful for a Nebraska pass defense, which is the top-ranked unit in the nation. The Huskers have a great secondary and they will really be tested in this game.

The Cowboys are not one-dimensional on offense, a they can also run the ball with RB Kendall Hunter, who ranks 5th in the nation averaging 138.3 yards per game. Nebraska only has the nation’s 74th ranked rushing defense and last week against Texas they gave up 209 yards on the ground.

Can the Huskers get back to running the ball after last weeks’ debacle? Can they do anything against the OSU dynamic offense? Those are the big questions for them in this game and I think the answer is yes to both. The Cowboys’ only wins over teams that are currently over .500 were against Troy and Tulsa, who are far from college football powerhouses. Nebraska will get back on track and win this game and cover the 5.5-point sending the Cowboys to their first loss of the season.

Betting Trends

Nebraska is 7-1 ATS in their last 8 road games against teams with a winning home record, and has an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 road games.

Oklahoma State is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games as an underdog, 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games as a home underdog, and has an Over record of 5-1 this season.

Pick: Nebraska -5.5
