Purdue

The Purdue Boilermakers have been hit harder by injuries than any team in the Big Ten. They were beaten twice in the non-conference schedule, but they have started out 2-0 in the Big Ten. This week the schedule gets much tougher as they must travel to Columbus and take on Ohio State.

The Purdue offense is led by quarterback Rob Henry. Henry took over the starting job after Robert Marve tore his ACL. Henry gives the offense another rushing threat, but he isn’t a prolific passer. Keith Smith was one of the best receivers in the Big Ten, but he also went down with a torn ACL at the beginning of the season. The Boilermakers only average 159 yards through the air each game, so they definitely rely on the running game quite often. This patched together offense will likely have a difficult time with the Buckeyes defense this weekend.

The Purdue defense started the year off poorly, but they have been improving quite a bit in recent weeks. The secondary is a weakness once again this year, but the front seven is pretty strong. The defense has done a nice job limiting their opponents to just 20.3 points per game so far this year.

The biggest task they’ll have this week is keeping a close eye on Terrelle Pryor and making sure he doesn’t break free.

Ohio State

The Ohio State Buckeyes had a very short stay at the #1 spot in the polls. Last week’s loss at Wisconsin dropped them to #10. Ohio State can still win the Big Ten, but they’ll need help. How will this team respond to adversity?

The Buckeyes offense is led by Terrelle Pryor, who is a great athlete at the quarterback position. Pryor is one of the best running quarterbacks you’ll ever see, and he is developing his passing game. He still needs to improve his decision making and prove he can lead this team to a win on the big stage. The Buckeyes offensive line has improved in recent games and Boom Herron appears to be stepping up as the lead running back for this team. They have a couple solid receivers in Posey and Sanzenbacher. Ohio State needs to do a better job of making the most of their opportunities when they get the ball in good field position. They have settled for field goals often this year, which can hurt quite a bit against the top teams in the league.

The Ohio State defense is definitely good, but last weekend proved they aren’t as good as many thought they were. The defensive line was beaten badly by Wisconsin and the Badgers running backs had massive holes to run through on a constant basis. This unit has produced only eight sacks, and they rarely get into the backfield, which is a big problem. In order to take that next step forward they’ll need to force their way into the backfield more often.

The Pick:

The Buckeyes were beaten at Purdue last year, and you know they remember that game well. I expect Ohio State to take out their frustration on Purdue here. The defense of Ohio State will likely dominate as Purdue’s offense simply doesn’t have the play makers necessary to move the ball consistently in this game. I like the under in this one.

Purdue vs. Ohio State Score Prediction: Ohio State 35 Purdue 7
