Nevada

I just love this Nevada team.  I always have a soft spot for unique offenses like the “Pistol” and I enjoy watching Colin Kaepernick glide towards the end zone.  This year the team is getting some better defensive efforts and is currently 6-0.  It looks like they are heading toward a showdown in Reno against Boise State and Hawaii is the biggest obstacle in making it that far with a perfect record.  I think everyone wants to see that happen for a variety of reasons.

With Kaepernick at the controls the Nevada offense is just lethal.  They have been very prolific in the past and enter the game in the top 7 in rushing yards, total yards and points.  This team can definitely score with any team in the nation and has some weapons at receiver to compliment the running duo of Kaepernick and Vai Taua.  With every  win and great performance the Nevada QB improves his chances of Heisman consideration.

These two teams play every year and only once in the past ten has the home team lost the game – Hawaii beat Nevada in their perfect regular season back in 2007.  Usually these contests are high scoring but two of the last three have gone under the total.  Nevada is flying high these days and will have to stay focused amidst the grass skirts or else they will leave the big island with a loss.

Hawaii

The Rainbow Warriors have looked great the last three weeks.  Three straight wins and three straight covers including an impressive upset of Fresno State last week.  After Boise State and Nevada this is the best team in the WAC and they would definitely relish being able to foil either teams bid for a perfect season.  This week they get their chance against Nevada at home which is a much better opportunity than traveling to Boise later in November.

There is no secret to Hawaii’s gameplan.  They are going to throw the ball, catch it and repeat.  Daring you to stop them.  QB Bryant Moniz is well on his way to a 4000 yard season (a given at UH) and he spreads the ball around.  They have 5 players who have caught double digit passes already lead by Greg Salas with 50.  The don’t run often but when they do they move the ball.  Their top two RBs average more than 5 yards per carry.

The game will come down to which defense can make some key stops to stall drives and force FGs.  Hawaii is giving up more than 170 yards on the ground per game this season.  Nevada will surely exceed that and Hawaii will test Nevada’s 82nd ranked passing defense.  It may only take a couple of stops to swing the tide either way in this one.  This is the last game of the weekend and I think it will be the most entertaining too.

The Pick: Nevada continues their winning ways winning by a couple of TDs.  Hawaii’s passing offense scare me a bit in this one in terms of making the back door cover.
