Maryland Terrapins (4-1)

What do we make of Maryland? The 4-1 start is nice but it’s not like the Terrapins have run through a gauntlet of national contenders. Their only real test came at West Virginia in September and Maryland failed it.

Still, the Terrapins have plenty to be happy about as they enter a vicious stretch of four road games in the next five weeks. They have the ACC’s top r scoring defense (18.4 PPG) and red-zone defense so far and rank sixth nationally in that regard.

The Terrapins have also gotten plenty cooking on offense this year, averaging more than 31 points per game. It also hasn’t seemed to matter whether Jamarr Robinson or Danny O’Brien is playing quarterback. Robinson threw four touchdown passes and two picks before hurting his shoulder and O’Brien has done well in caretaker duty since, throwing for six touchdowns and no interceptions. Though Robinson looks like he’s healed, O’Brien may have wrestled the job from him. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Clemson Tigers (2-3)

The Clemson Tigers are undoubtedly frustrated by their 2-3 start but all hope is not lost. In the last 25 years, they’ve opened 2-3 eight times. In six of those eight seasons, they’ve rallied to become bowl eligible. They started 2-3 last season and rallied to reach the ACC title game. In other words, they still have plenty to play for this week.

The Tigers’ three-game losing streak could have been preventable. They had three straight tough matchups – at Auburn, Miami (FL), at North Carolina – and lost each one by nine points or fewer. They blew a 17-point lead against Auburn; they turned the ball over six times against Miami; they had nine penalties against North Carolina. When you think about it, the Tigers could have easily started the year 5-0.

We can expect Clemson to lean heavily on Andre Ellington, who has seven rushing touchdowns and averages 87 yard per game with 6.6 yards per carry this season. But a breakout effort from quarterback Kyle Parker would go a long way. He threw six touchdown passes in his first three games this year has just one in the last two weeks and threw three interceptions against Miami.

The pick:

The betting trends seem to favor Maryland; it beat Clemson last year and is 6-1 against the spread in its last seven games as a road underdog of 10.5 or more points. But I like Clemson here. Maryland – and, more specifically, O’Brien – hasn’t really been tested this year. Clemson is angry and battle-hardened after three straight close losses to tough opponents.

It’s also rumored that Maryland may put O’Brien and Robinson both into the mix at quarterback on Saturday. Against a Clemson “D” that likes to ballhawk (seven interceptions this season), a wonky rhythm for either signal caller in a tough road environment could be disastrous for Maryland’s offense.

Expect a statement game at home from Clemson; the Tigers will expose Maryland as a pretender.
