Iowa

The Iowa Hawkeyes self-destructed for the first 20 minutes or so in Arizona, but other than that they have been great this year. This is a team that dominates in the trenches and plays very sound fundamentally. They have their sights set on a Big Ten title.

Ricky Stanzi made it his goal in the offseason to improve his decision making and minimize turnovers. No doubt he has done a terrific job of this so far this season. Stanzi has thrown 10 touchdown passes and just two interceptions this year. The Iowa offense definitely misses Jewel Hampton, who is out for the year with a knee injury, but Adam Robinson does a solid job at the running back spot. The Hawkeyes have a couple reliable wide receivers in McNutt and Johnson-Koulianos. The offensive line has allowed more sacks than normal, but most of those were early in the season, and they appear to be improving.

The Iowa defense is the real strength of this team. Iowa’s defense allows the fewest points per game of anyone in the nation at 10.2. They are second in the nation in rushing yards allowed per game and fourth in total yards allowed per game. It all starts up front with a frightening foursome of linemen. Adrian Clayborn, Karl Klug, Broderick Binns, and Christian Ballard are all terrific at getting penetration and disrupting the offense. The secondary is led by Tyler Sash, and they are solid as well.

This is definitely one of the best defenses in the country.

Michigan

The Michigan Wolverines started the year 5-0 before losing to Michigan State last weekend. They’ll want to make sure they don’t allow a losing streak to get started this year like they did in 2009. This team is dynamic, but they still need to prove they can win on a consistent basis against the top teams in their league.

Denard Robinson had a bit of an off week last weekend, but he has been absolutely amazing this year. Robinson has run for 991 yards already this year, and he has thrown for 1,223 yards. Robinson is averaging 8.3 yards per carry, and he has shown the ability to take it to the house every time he touches the football. This offense is ranked third in the nation in total offense. If they can find a consistent tailback to complement Robinson, this running game will be even more threatening. This offense is high-powered and they have play makers all over the field.

The Michigan defense has been a real problem the last couple years, and this year is no different. The pass defense is absolutely atrocious, and the run defense isn’t very good either. This Michigan team is allowing 304 yards through the air each game, and they are giving up 27 points per game. Last weekend, Michigan State gashed them for 249 rushing yards in route to a big victory in Ann Arbor. Mike Martin is strong up front, but the rest of the front seven must improve. The secondary is injury depleted, especially at the safety position. This unit must improve if Michigan is going to contend in the Big Ten this year.

The Pick:

Michigan will be fired up to try to get back on the winning track, but Iowa is a very formidable opponent. This is actually one of my ATS premium plays this weekend.

I’m sitting at the top of the overall handicapping rankings and have been hot of late. Get this Michigan/Iowa ATS pick as part of the “Saturday ATS Three Pack of Winners.”
