Illinois

The Fighting Illini were expected to be near the bottom of the Big Ten, but they have surprised a lot of people in the last couple weeks. They played Ohio State very tough, then went on the road and dismantled Penn State last weekend. Can they upset another conference foe?

The Illinois offense is led by freshman quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase. Scheelhaase still has quite a bit of learning to do, but he is showing himself to be a nice play maker at the quarterback spot. Mikel LeShoure has been the star of the offense so far this year. LeShoure is averaging 5.8 yards per carry and he has rushed for over 100 yards in every game except for one this season. Jarred Fayson and A.J. Jenkins are capable receivers who give the Illini the ability to move the chains through the air as well.

The number one reason this team has surprised of late has been the impressive play of the defense. The Fighting Illini defense is ranked in the top 20 in the country in total defense. They allow just 305 yards per game. Cory Liuget is leading a much improved defensive line. Nate Bussey and Martez Wilson are both great play makers at the linebacker spot.

This defense is very athletic and they have the potential to cause problems for Michigan State.

Michigan State

The Spartans of Michigan State got their coach back last weekend and they went out and took it to the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor. Michigan State is clearly for real this year, and they have a legitimate shot at winning the Big Ten title. They must avoid a slip up against teams like Illinois if they are going to win this conference.

The Spartans offense is driven by a terrific running game. Michigan State is ranked 14th in the nation in rushing offense. The Spartans have a terrific duo at tailback in Edwin Baker and Le’Veon Bell. Baker averages 7.0 yards per carry and Bell averages a stunning 7.7 yards per carry. While the running game is where it starts, Kirk Cousins is a terrific quarterback as well. This team definitely has the ability to air it out when necessary. Cousins has ten touchdown passes and just four interceptions on the season thus far. The balance of this offense makes them one of the best in the country.

The Michigan State defense still has some room for improvement, but they showed last weekend that they are a much better unit than they were a year ago. Denard Robinson struggled quite a bit against this group. The Spartans have a terrific trio at linebacker, including middle linebacker Greg Jones, who may be the best linebacker in the country. The secondary is still quite weak, which means they could struggle against teams who throw the ball very well.

The Pick:

Illinois is a surprise team, but Michigan State is better at this point. Michigan State will run the ball early and often in this one. I think Illinois lacks the weapons necessary to hurt this Spartans secondary. I think under 51 is the best play here as I think both teams will be running the ball and keeping the clock rolling.

Illinois vs. Michigan State Score Prediction: Michigan State 28 Illinois 20
