Iowa State Cyclones vs. No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners

The undefeated Oklahoma Sooners (5-0) host the Iowa Cyclones (3-3) this Saturday in a Big 12 game that may get ugly. College betting lines has Oklahoma as 23.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 58.5.

Iowa State gave up 68 points in their last game and their main RB is banged up and may not play. Oklahoma is playing great and beat Texas in their last game in the big Red River rivalry game.

The Sooners may be flying under the radar a tad, as nobody is really talking about them as a National Championship contender. They still have to face Oklahoma State and Missouri, who are both ranked in the top 25, but they may run the table this season and it will hard to deny them a shot in the big game if they accomplish that.

Iowa State is only playing in their 2nd road game of the season this Saturday and in their first road game Iowa handed them a 35-7 beat down.

Heading into this Big 12 battle Oklahoma is 2-3 ATS and Iowa State is 3-3 ATS.

In the last 5 games between these 2 teams the Cyclones have only covered the spread one time.

In their last games Iowa State was embarrassed losing at home to Utah 68-27 while Oklahoma beat Texas 28-20 on October 2nd.

The Sooners have the nation’s 17th ranked passing attack led by QB Landry Jones (1,457 yards 11 TD). Jones has been played stellar in his last 2 games combining to pass for 606 yards and 4 TD. He has a good corps of receivers, especially Ryan Broyles (46 rec 518 yards 4 TD), and they will be facing a Iowa State pass defense that ranks 66th in the nation and last week against Utah gave up 354 yards in the air. Look for Jones to have a big game for a third straight contest.

One problem the Sooners have had on offense this season is running the ball, which is surprising since they feature one-time Heisman candidate RB DeMarco Murray in the backfield. OU only ranks 90th in the nation in rushing yards per game, but Murray had 115 rushing yards in the win over Texas. He may get a lot of carries in this game and with good reason since the Cyclones’ rushing defense only ranks 102nd in the nation.

If the Iowa State defense cannot keep Jones and Murray from having big games they may give up a ton of points and their offense will have to bail them out. However, that will not happen with a Cyclones’ offense that ranks 63rd in the nation in rushing yards per game and 96th in passing yards per game.

You may look back on the Iowa State schedule and see that they did put up 52 points against Texas Tech, but Tech had 3 turnovers in the game, more total yards, and have a pass defense that ranks 114th out of 120 teams.

Iowa State is led by QB Austen Arnaud (958 yards 8 TD) and he would really like to forget about the game last week against Utah when he only connected on 13/30 passes for 2 TD and 2 INT. His WR corps is decent, but not great, as they do not have one player that is averaging over 50 receiving yards per game. The Sooners’ pass D only ranks 98th in the nation, but their front line will pressure Arnaud and not give him a lot of time in the pocket.

The Cyclones are crossing their fingers that RB Alexander Robinson (449 yards 5 TD) will be able to play in this game. He hurt his foot last week against Utah and was unable to finish the game. Iowa State will need his offense and the second leading rusher for them is RB Shontrelle Johnson, who did rush for 50 yards on only 5 carries against Utah, but the game was already over by the time he got in.

Oklahoma is not like the OU teams in the past with great defenses, but they have all the offense they need to easily win this game and cover the spread. On top of that the main offensive weapon for the Cyclones is questionable for the game and they have not won on the road since the middle of last season.

Betting Trends

Iowa State is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games, 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games against teams with a winning record, and have an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 road games.
Oklahoma is 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 Big 12 games 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as a home favorite of 10.5 or more, and has an Under record of 13-6 in their last 19 games.

Pick: Oklahoma -23.5
