Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders Preview

In a Big 12 match up this Saturday afternoon the Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-2) host the Oklahoma State Cowboys (5-0). College betting lines have Texas Tech as 3.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 69.

I think it is pretty safe to say this game will not be a low scoring defensive battle, as each team is ranked in the top 5 in the nation in passing yards per game and neither team is ranked in the top 110 in the nation in pass defense. Look for some fireworks through the air in this game and for the point total to be very high.

With the offenses each team has the Over has to be the call and in looking at some trends OSU has gone over in every game this season and Texas Tech has an over record of 5-1 in their last 6 games and an Over record of 5-0 in their last 5 games when they are the favorite.

OSU has the nation’s 2nd ranked passing offense, but they will be without WR Michael Harrison (6 rec 71 yards 2 TD) because of a broken finger and the WR duo of Hubert Anyiam (8 rec 116 yards 3 TD) and Josh Cooper (22 rec 259 yards 1 TD) are questionable with injuries. If Cooper can’t go it will be a big blow, as he is the Cowboys 2nd leading receiver.

To say that Tech has had OSU’s number for the past few years is an understatement, as the Cowboys have not won in Lubbock in their last 9 games and the last time they won there was just a few years back in 1944!

This season Oklahoma State bettors have been happy campers since the Cowboys are 4-1 ATS while the Red Raiders are 2-3 ATS.

In their last games Texas Tech avoided their first ever 0-3 start in Big 12 play with a 45-38 win over Baylor and Oklahoma State beat Louisiana-Lafayette 54-28.

QB Brandon Weeden (1,610 yards 16 TD 8 INT) leads the Cowboys and their dynamic offense and his main target is WR Justin Blackmon (47 rec 748 yards 11 TD), who was sensational last week catching 13 passes for 190 yards. The Tech pass defense ranks 114th in the nation and last week against Baylor they gave up 427 passing yards.

Where the Cowboys have the advantage on offense is their rushing attack, which ranks 51st in the nation led by RB Kendall Hunter (700 yards 9 TD), who rushed for 126 yards last week and for the season he is averaging a solid 6.4 yards per carry. The Tech rushing defense does rank 39th in the nation and last week against Baylor they played well only giving up 80 rushing yards.

If Hunter can have a good game it will help the Cowboys control the clock and keep the high-powered offense of Texas Tech on the sidelines.

The Red Raiders and their 4th ranked passing offense is led by QB Taylor Potts (1,649 yards 18 TD 6 INT), who passed for 462 yards with 4 TD and 1 INT last week. He has a slew of solid receivers, but even though Tech rushed for 173 yards last week they will likely not have that success this Saturday against an OSU rushing defense that ranks 29th in the nation.

Since each team has a weak secondary the pass rushing will be important and each team is pretty even with Tech having 15 sacks on the season and OSU having 13.

I think the Cowboys are for real and they will show it in this game. Even though OSU is 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games as an underdog they will break their losing streak in Lubbock and come out and win this game behind Hunter having a solid game on the ground.

Betting Trends

Oklahoma State is 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and have an Under record of 11-3 in their last 14 games on the road.
Texas Tech is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games against teams that have a winning record, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following an ATS win, and has an Under record of 5-2 in their last 7 Big 12 games.

Pick: Oklahoma State +3 and the Over
