The Pittsburgh Panthers travel to South Bend, Indiana this upcoming Saturday afternoon to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a non-conference tilt. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and the game will be televised live on NBC.

Pittsburgh evened its record to 2-2 straight up and 1-2-1 against the spread with a dominating 44-17 win over Florida International last week as a 17 point home favorite. The total went way over the 51 ½ point line. This win followed up a 31-3 rout at the hands of No. 13 Miami the week before. The Panthers came nowhere close to covering as a four-point home underdog and the total stayed well ‘under’ the 48 ½ point line. NFL Betting

Through four games, Pitt’s offense is averaging 169.8 yards per game on the ground but just 183.3 yards through the air. QB Tino Sunseri has been efficient at best; completing 63 percent of his passes for 689 yards and four TD’s. WR’s Jon Baldwin and Mike Shanahan have combined for 29 receptions for 401 yards and two TD’s. The real workhorse of this offense has been RB Ray Graham, who has 492 rushing yards on 52 carries for an average of 9.5 yards per run.

Notre Dame may have salvaged its season (at least for now) with a dominant 31-13 road win over Boston College last week after enduring three straight losses at the hands of Michigan and Michigan State by a combined seven points and to Stanford by 23 points as a four-point home underdog. The Irish were favored over the Eagles by three and the total stayed ‘under’ the 46 ½ point line. Notre Dame is now 2-3 both SU and ATS on the year.

The Fighting Irish offense has passed for 1465 yards mainly behind the arm of Dayne Crist. Nate Montana, Joe Montana’s son, has seen very limited action. WR’s Michael Floyd has 28 catches for 408 yards and two TD’s and Theo Riddick has 320 yards on 30 receptions and three TD’s. RB Armando Allen Jr. is the team’s leading rusher with 392 yards on 80 carries.

Betting Trends:

Pitt is 6-4 SU in its last 10 games and 5-4-1 ATS, but just 1-2-1 ATS in their last four games. The total has been evenly split in the last 10 games with five going ‘over’ the line and five staying ‘under’.
Notre Dame is 3-7 SU and 4-6 ATS in its last 10 games. The Irish are 2-4 SU and 0-6 ATS in their last six games in South Bend. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of their last 10 games overall.

Head-to-head, Notre Dame has won six out of the last 10 SU, but Pitt has won three out of the last four including a 27-22 win last year at home and a 36-33 OT win on the road in 2008. The Irish have won five out of the last seven games ATS. This matchup has been traditionally close over the past few years and this one should be no exception. Notre Dame finds a way to get the win at home, but the Panthers keep it close enough to cover the points.

The Pick: Pittsburgh +6
