The Fighting Illini put a scare into the Buckeyes last weekend at home, but they were unable to finish the game strong. Illinois now sits at 2-2 on the season and they have a difficult schedule ahead of them.
The Illinois offense is led by a talented freshman quarterback, Nathan Scheelhaase. He is a mobile guy who keeps play alive with his feet and has a nice throwing motion. He needs to improve his decision making, but he looks solid as a freshman. Mikel LeShoure has done a great job at the running back spot for this team. He is averaging 6.2 yards per carry and he has been solid in every game this year. The team definitely misses Arrelious Benn, and they don’t have any great play maker at the wide receiver position.
The Fighting Illini defense has been better than most expected so far in 2010. Martez Wilson is healthy again this year, and he is proving to be a great leader for this unit. Cory Liuget is also stepping up nicely and proving a run stopper on the line. Illinois has only allowed 18 points per game, and that includes games against Ohio State and Missouri. If there is one weakness in the defense it would be the secondary, but the front four are doing a good job putting heat on the quarterback and helping the cornerbacks. 
Penn State
The Nittany Lions were beaten up badly in Iowa last weekend. Iowa dominated the game and won 24-3. Joe Paterno’s team has to get some kind of spark going, and they must improve quickly if they want to stay in the Big Ten race.
Everyone knew there would be some issues going into the year with a true freshman starting at quarterback for Penn State, but the rest of the offense hasn’t been doing their job well at all. Evan Royster had one huge game against Temple, but other than that game the most yards he has gained in a game this year is 56. The offensive line is not nearly as good as they should be and that is hurting the progress of freshman quarterback Robert Bolden as well. This isn’t a team that has enough weapons to simply open it up and throw the ball constantly, so they must improve in the ground game.
The Penn State defense has done a very nice job so far this year. They are allowing just 15 points per game, and held their own pretty well against both Iowa and Alabama. The defensive line is very strong and they do a nice job stuffing the run and rushing the passer. The secondary doesn’t have a single star, but they have plenty of quality athletes who play smart football. This is one of the better defenses in the Big Ten.
The Pick:
Illinois has always played Ohio State tough, but they tend to be a team that is extremely inconsistent. I think there is a good chance Penn State will get their running game going in this one and the Nittany Lions defense will dominate. I like Penn State to cover the spread in this one.
