Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Kansas State Wildcats Preview

In the Thursday night ESPN game between a couple of undefeated teams in the Big 12 the Kansas State Wildcats (4-0) host the 7th ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers (4-0). College betting lines have Nebraska as 12-points favorites in this game and a total has not been posted yet.

The Huskers have a solid squad this year and Kansas State may be their biggest test so far, as Nebraska has only played one team this season that currently has a winning record.

Kansas State is off to a good start and they have played a tougher non-conference schedule than Nebraska having good wins over UCLA and Central Florida.

The Huskers have really had the Wildcats’ number, as the last time Kansas State beat Nebraska was in the 2004 season.

The team that can play to their strength in this game should win, as both teams have a solid rushing offense, but do not feature a good passing offense. Nebraska has the edge on defense, as they rank 11th in the nation while Kansas State ranks 57th.

If KSU can win this game they will likely be ranked next week.

Heading into this Big 12 game Nebraska is 1-2-1 ATS and Kansas State is 2-2 ATS.

In their last games Nebraska beat a pretty weak South Dakota State team 17-3 and Kansas State beat Central Florida 17-13. Both teams should be well rested since each had last week off.

The strength of the Huskers is their rushing offense, which ranks 4th in the nation averaging 309.3 rushing yards per game. This game is not a good match up for Kansas State, as while they have a solid pass defense their rushing defense only ranks 102nd in the nation and even though they won last week against Central Florida they gave up 252 rushing yards.

The Huskers’ offense is led by duel-threat QB Taylor Martinez, who passed for 140 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT and rushed for 75 yards in the win over South Dakota State. RB Rex Burkhead, who has 304 yards and 3 TD this season, joins him in the backfield. If the Wildcats cannot keep these guys from picking up big chunks of yards on the ground they will be in for a long game.

KSU must play good D in this game, but stopping the rushing offense of the Huskers and keeping Nebraska from lighting up the scoreboard will not be easy. In the last 9 Big 12 games that Nebraska has played in the total has gone Over 7 times.

Kansas State did not cover the 6.5-point spread in the win over Central Florida and they needed a late TD to secure the victory.

Kansas State has the nation’s 22nd ranked rushing offense and their main weapon is RB Daniel Thomas, who rushed for 76 yards in the win over Central Florida, but he only averaged 3.5 yards per carry. He will be facing a Nebraska rushing D that ranks 53rd in the nation and gave up 141 rushing yards to South Dakota State.

The Huskers did not look impressive in beating South Dakota State of the FBS and if they cannot contain Thomas they may be in for an upset. On the flip side if they can keep Thomas from having a big game they will be in good shape since the KSU passing offense only ranks 103rd in the nation.

Wildcats’ QB Carson Coffman is a decent passer and he can take some pressure off Thomas by moving the chains in the air, but that will not be easy against a Huskers’ pass defense that ranks 3rd in the nation only giving up an average of 126.25 passing yards per game.

The big question in this game is can the Wildcats stop the Huskers’ rushing attack? Their run D has been poor this season and I would think the answer is no. The Huskers will run all day long and be successful doing it, as they will easily win this game and cover the spread.

Betting Trends:

Kansas State is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 Big 12 games, 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games, and has an Under record of 4-0 in their last 4 Big 12 games.
Nebraska is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 road games, 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games against teams with a winning record, and has an Under record of 13-6 in their last 19 games.

Pick: Nebraska -12
