Central Michigan

There hasn’t been much to celebrate this season in year 1 of the post Dan LeFevour era.  Sure they have two wins but beating Hampton and Eastern Michigan were hardly surprises and they they came up just short against Northwestern and Temple, the two best teams on their schedule so far.  The real head scratcher was last week’s loss to Ball State.  They lost to the Cardinals by 14 as -19.5 point favourites.  One of the bigger point swings we will see all season.

Even though the QB is new this year the Chippewas have not struggled moving the ball through the air.  Sophomore QB Ryan Radcliffe is averaging just under 300 yards passing to the likes of Cody Wilson who caught only 25 passes last year but has already matched that total through just five games.  Radcliff, like a lot of first time starters, forces the ball sometimes.  In the two CMU wins he is 3-0 TD-INT in their three losses he has a ratio of 4-7.  That says it all.

CMU could easily be 4-1 with a couple of nice victories but they seem to be a classic team in transition.  LeFevour made all the big plays over the last four years, with both his arm and his legs, and you don’t replace a guy like that so easily.  Just look at the way Florida is struggling minus Tebow, and they had the luxury of replacing him with someone who was very highly touted.

CMU is a feisty team but now that Virginia Tech has awakened I don’t see them being able to pull off the upset.

Virginia Tech

It is easy to forget that Virginia Tech only lost to Boise State by three in the opener.  That was a hard loss and it is likely as close as anyone is going to get to beating Boise this season….but then the Hokies lost to James Madison and all hell broke loose.  As expected Frank Beamer righted the ship and Virginia Tech has established themselves as an ACC favourite, taking the air out of NC State last week on the road.

It seems like Tyrod Taylor has been around forever, doesn’t it?  He is enjoying a nice season overall although it is surprising that he is the team’s leading rusher so far given the Hokies bevvy of riches at running back.  Last year’s phenom Ryan Williams is dinged up but Darren Evans looked really good last week, rushing for 160 yards and averaging almost 11 yards per carry.  The Hokies are still a couple more injuries away from concern at running back.

What is a concern is the defense.  Normally the strength of the team the Hokies do not rank in the top 50 nationally in either total yards or points allowed.  This is a huge departure from the norm and must have Bud Foster wondering what is going on.  Central Michigan has a relatively potent attack and the Hokies will want to avoid having to match them up and down the field.  They need to start exerting themselves on defense.

The Pick: Virginia Tech should have an easy win but the big spread make me nervous about a backdoor cover.  The best play here is probably the over.
