Mike London is doing his best to turn the Cavaliers football program around, but this isn’t something that happens overnight. The team is short on play makers and will struggle against the best teams in the ACC this year.
Virginia has found a solid quarterback in Marc Verica. Verica has done a nice job guiding the offense and minimizing turnovers so far this year. The biggest problem this offense has is that they simply don’t have much of a running game. Keith Payne is their leading rusher and he is questionable for this game due to injury. The team is only averaging 126 yards per game on the ground. The offensive line has struggled to protect the quarterback and open up holes in the running game.
The Cavaliers defense has improved quite a bit in 2010. Virginia is allowing only 17.8 points per game. Chase Minnifield already has three interceptions on the year, and he is the leader of a strong secondary. The team has struggled a bit against great rushing attacks, which means this game will be a concern. Can they handle the excellent triple option attack of Georgia Tech?
This will be a huge test for this unit. 
Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech is a team that has dropped a few notches from last year, but they are still a very dangerous team to play because of their amazing running game.
The Yellow Jackets offense is led by senior quarterback Josh Nesbitt. Nesbitt is the leading rusher for this team, and he makes great decisions when they run their triple option. The downside to his game is that he is a poor passer. Nesbitt has completed only 39% of his passes and Georgia Tech averages only 90 passing yards per game. The ground game definitely has to shoulder the load for this team. The rushing attack ranks sixth best in the nation. Georgia Tech is averaging 298 yards per game on the ground. Paul Johnson’s team can win solely by running the football effectively.
The Georgia Tech defense is mediocre. This is a defense that often has trouble stopping an opponent with a strong running attack. North Carolina State rolled up 527 yards on them a couple weeks ago. The Yellow Jackets don’t force very many turnovers either, which adds to their defensive issues. It isn’t that this defense is terrible, but they just don’t have any big play makers and they tend to give up big plays for too often. This is a unit that needs to improve if Georgia Tech is going to challenge for the ACC crown.
The Pick:
Virginia has a solid defense, but I suspect they will struggle mightily against this great triple option attack of Georgia Tech. At the same time, I do believe Virginia will be able to move the football effectively against this Yellow Jacket defense. I think the best play on the board in this one is the over.
