Before the season started, Purdue was seen as a dark horse team that could make some noise in the Big Ten. The team has suffered all kinds of major injuries and they are in a state of disarray at this point.
Robert Marve is done for the season, so it will be Rob Henry starting at the quarterback position the rest of the season for Purdue. Henry is a talented freshman quarterback, but he doesn’t have a full grasp on the system just yet. The worst news for him is that all of his primary weapons on offense are missing because of injury. Keith Smith was one of the best receivers in the Big Ten, but he is out for the year. Ralph Bolden was the leading rusher for Purdue a year ago, but he is out for the season as well. Ironically Mavre, Smith, and Bolden are all out with a torn ACL.
The offense will likely struggle the rest of this season.
The Boilermakers defense is a decent unit, but they definitely aren’t spectacular. They have a real weakness when it comes to stopping the opponent on third down. Opponents are converting on 46.3% of their third down attempts, which is an extremely high rate. They have yet to face a top of the line passing attack, and their secondary is a big question mark.
I expect this defense to struggle against the best quarterbacks in the league. 
Northwestern
The Wildcats haven’t played a tough schedule thus far, but it is still impressive that this team sits at 5-0. Pat Fitzgerald has done a great job with this program, and this team plays hard every week.
Dan Persa is having a terrific year in his first year as the starting quarterback for the Wildcats. Persa is completing a spectacular 79% of his passes and he has thrown 10 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions this year! The short passing game of Northwestern has led to 278 yards per game through the air so far this season. They lack a play maker at running back, but Persa does have some impressive scrambling ability that comes in handy. The Wildcats lost quite a bit on offense from last year, but they are looking very good once again in 2010.
The Northwestern defense has allowed quite a few yards this year, but they have done a good job keeping their opponent out of the end zone most of the time. Despite ranking 75th in total yards allowed per game, this defense is only allowing 18 points per game. The secondary is the big worry for this unit. Purdue doesn’t have the play makers to test the secondary, but later in the year I expect this Wildcat defense to struggle against quality passing attacks.
The Pick:
Purdue just doesn’t have the offensive firepower necessary to outscore people now. Northwestern’s passing attack will likely fare well against the weak Purdue secondary. My favorite play on the board for this game is the under. The under is 36-16-1 in Purdue’s last 53 Big Ten games. The under is also 7-1 in the last 8 meetings between these two.
