Tennessee
Derek Dooley just doesn’t have the elite talent to work with in his first year at Tennessee. The Volunteers are lacking in depth and don’t have any stars. The team fought hard against Florida two weeks ago, but fell in the end. Last weekend, they had to go into double overtime to defeat UAB.
The Volunteers offense is led by Matt Simms at the quarterback spot. Simms has played fairly well this year, and the passing game has improved over the last couple weeks. The Volunteers don’t have a single running back they can count on this year, and that is definitely hurting them. Against both Florida and Oregon this offense has struggled mightily to put together long drives. The offensive line is pieced together and simply doesn’t have the normal talent of a Tennessee offensive line.
The Tennessee defense was absolutely chewed up last weekend by UAB. The Blazers actually gained 503 yards of total offense against Tennessee. Tennessee is allowing 27 points per game so far this year, which makes them 82nd in the nation. A couple of their key defensive linemen, Ben Martin and Marlon Walls, are both out with injury problems right now. This is a defense that is scrappy, but they get out of position quite frequently. 
LSU
The LSU Tigers come into this game at 4-0, but they certainly have a lot of work to do on the offensive side of the football. In addition, the team must cut down on their penalties. Last week against West Virginia the Tigers were flagged for 120 yards worth of penalties.
The Tigers offense has been bad so far this year. LSU hasn’t been able to get anything at all going through the air. Jordan Jefferson now has three straight games with less than 100 yards passing. The wide receivers aren’t nearly as dynamic as normal, and even when they are open Jefferson has been very inaccurate. The running game has been decent, with Steven Ridley doing a solid job at the tailback spot. As a whole, the offense is ranked 102nd in total yards in the nation. LSU must improve on this side of the ball if they are going to beat the best in the SEC.
The Tigers offense may be disappointing, but the defense looks tremendous this year. The defense ranks ninth in the nation in total yards allowed. They are allowing just 75 yards per game on the ground. The front four are athletic and strong and Patrick Peterson is a terrific weapon at the cornerback spot. LSU’s defense is only allowing 12 points per game so far this year, and they appear to have what it takes to be one of the best defenses in the country this season.
The Pick:
LSU is definitely the more talented team here, but I don’t like laying this many points on an offense that is struggling so badly. Since LSU is likely to shut down Tennessee quite well, I think the best play here is the under.
