Penn State

The Nittany Lions got a pretty big scare from Temple, but they came back in the second half and defeated them 22-13. Penn State is now 3-1, but they have quite a bit of work to do, and this game will be a very tough test.

The Penn State offense is led by true freshman Robert Bolden. Bolden is a talented player, but he is a freshman and his inconsistency will likely hurt the team at times this year. The biggest concern for Penn State has been that the running game hasn’t been able to get going. Last weekend Evan Royster had a huge game, but he still is averaging the least yards per carry of his four year career. The line hasn’t been as sturdy as normal and they must improve as the season goes along.

The Nittany Lions defense is very solid. The defensive line is big and strong, and they have done a good job getting after the quarterback this year. The Nittany Lions have two defensive ends that are great at rushing around the edge. The secondary is fairly young, but they look terrific so far this year.

The linebackers aren’t as dynamic as recent years, but with a great front and back line of the defense, this unit is one of the best in the Big Ten. College Football

Iowa

The Iowa Hawkeyes likely had their National Championship hopes dashed in Arizona a couple weeks ago, but this is still a team that could do a lot of damage the rest of the year. Kirk Ferentz has a team that plays the way he likes and they are very mentally and physically tough.

The Iowa offense is led by quarterback Ricky Stanzi. Stanzi is a senior and he is having his best year at Iowa so far this year. He has completed 67% of his passes and has nine touchdowns and just one interception so far this year. Both Marvin McNutt and Derrell Johnson-Koulianos are high quality receivers who can be counted on in the clutch. The Hawkeyes offense lost Jewel Hampton to a torn ACL, but Adam Robinson is a solid running back as well. In the Arizona game the offensive line was a major problem, so that will be something that needs to improve through the year.

The Iowa defense is ranked #1 in the nation in total yards allowed per game in 2010. The Hawkeyes are strong up front with Adrian Clayborn and Karl Klug leading the way. At the back of their defense they have the best safety in the Big Ten, Tyler Sash. This is a defense that is extremely difficult to run the football against, because even the safeties and cornerbacks are very good in helping stop the run. The pass defense is solid, and they are aided by what is a great pass rush as well.

The Pick:

The Nittany Lions and Hawkeyes always play a very hard fought style of football, so this should be a great game to watch. This game is one of my premium plays this week. I went 8-2 last Saturday and you can get this pick in the “ATS Terrific Trifecta”  package this weekend.
