Tulsa Golden Hurricane vs. Memphis Tigers Preview

On Saturday night in a Conference USA match up the Memphis Tigers (1-3) host the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (2-2). College football lines have Tulsa as 9.5-point favorite in this game with a total of 62.5.

Heading into this game both teams are winless in Conference USA play, as Memphis is 0-2 and Tulsa is 0-1.

Memphis has not got off to a good start this season and their only win was against Middle Tennessee State, who is far from a college football powerhouse. The Tigers have their hands full in this game against a legit Tulsa squad, since they only rank 91st on defense and do not rank in the top 75 in the nation in passing or rushing yards per game.

Tulsa’s season has been predictable so far, as they have lost to the teams they should have lost to and beat the teams they should have beat. The Golden Hurricane have a great offense, especially their passing offense ranking 8th in the nation, and they will have to play well on that side of the ball, as they only rank 113th in the nation on defense.

Heading into this Conference USA game Memphis is 2-2 ATS and Tulsa is 1-3 ATS.

Last season Tulsa beat Memphis 33-30 in OT.

In their last games Tulsa beat Central Arkansas 41-14 and Memphis lost a tough game to UTEP 16-13.

Heading into this conference game Tulsa is 1-3 ATS and Memphis is 2-2 ATS.

Tulsa racked up a whopping 539 yards against Central Arkansas, but hey it’s Central Arkansas.

Tulsa and their high powered offense is led by QB G.J. Kinne, who was 22/33 for 232 yards with 3 TD and 1 INT last week. He has a good WR corps and the Tigers and their 103rd ranked passing D has a tall task in this game. Since the Memphis secondary is a little sketchy their front line D had to pressure Kinne and not give him time in the pocket or they may be in for a long home game.

The Golden Hurricane are not one-dimensional on offense, as their rushing offense ranks 26th in the nation and last week had 282 rushing yards against Central Arkansas. Alex Singleton is the featured RB and he is averaging 7.8 yards per carry this season and he will be facing a Memphis rushing defense, which is decent and ranks 54th in the nation and allowed 117 yards on the ground to UTEP last week.

Memphis ranks 78th in the nation in passing offense and they are led by QB Ryan Williams, who was 20/30 for 144 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT, but he only averaged 4.8 yards per pass. The Tigers do not have many big play WR’s, but they may want to air it out against a Tulsa pass defense that ranks dead last in the FBS (120th).

Since the Golden Hurricane have the worst pass D in the nation they can really help the secondary out if they can get to Williams and they are averaging 2 sacks per game. Memphis only ranks 80th in the nation in sacks allowed (10) and their offensive line has to step up and protect Williams, as if they do not they have no chance to win this game.

The Tigers do not have a great rushing offense ranking 98th in the nation, but they did have 144 yards on the ground last week against UTEP and they have a couple of RB’s that each have 221 yards on the season.

If Memphis had even a decent offense they could win this game, but they don’t and their defense is not good either and they will not be able to keep up with Tulsa. If this game becomes a shootout, which is a legit possibility, Tulsa will easily win this game and they will do just that and cover the 9-point spread.

Trends:

Tulsa is 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games, 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games as a favorite, and has an Over record of 5-0 in their last 5 Conference USA games.
Memphis is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 Conference USA games and has an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 home games.

Pick: Tulsa -9
