Kent State

There will be some important games in the MAC this year but this one will not be among them.  The Golden Flashes lone victory this year came against FCS Murray State and they have lost back to back against Boston College and Penn State – although there is really no surprise there.  PSU shut them out two weeks ago so they have had two weeks to figure out how to generate some offense.

Despite the poor record the defense has been very solid in the early going.  They have seven starters back and believe it or not they have the best rushing defense in the nation at a hair over 60ypg.  This stat is pretty impressive given they have played two BCS teams that usually are effective on the ground.  If they had a better offense they might be considered a contender in the MAC this season.

Like so many struggling teams their big problem on offense is turnovers.  Starting QB Spencer Keith has thrown multiple interceptions the last two games and they really killed any chance Kent State might have had to play spoiler.  Mighty Mite Eugene Jarvis, who seems like he has been around forever, is still the feature back, but he is dealing with a nagging groin injury this season and hasn’t carried the ball much.  They need him to return to his sophomore form where he rushed for nearly 1700 yards and was one of the most dangerous weapons in the conference.  Due to his small stature he is very difficult to tackle and he is the only one in their offense you that is a threat on every play.

Miami

The RedHawks won only one game last year so the fact that they have two already is definitely a step in the right direction for coach Mike Haywood.  Even more impressive than the two victories (over Eastern Michigan and Colorado State) was the way that the team challenged Florida in the opener.  The defense held them to just 212 yards but the offense just couldn’t put the points on the board to complete what would have been a fantastic upset.

Kent State has beaten Miami their last two trips to Oxford – both were upset victories. If the RedHawks want to get back to being a contender in the MAC they have to get better at defending their home turf.  The best way to do that is on the defensive side of the ball.  They were impressive against Florida in the opener but have regressed each week, giving up 51 points and nearly 500 yards to Mizzou last week.  Kent State is not nearly as potent and they need to make sure they stay that way.

I was really surprised by the spread on this game.  Given the calibre of these teams I thought Miami would be slightly favoured at home but they are a short dog.  That makes them very tempting but I am worried that it might also mean that QB Zac Dysert is more hurt then originally thought.  The backup is Austin Boucher who is hardly a household name.  There would be a lot of pressure on the young freshman, who would be making his first start if Dysert can’t answer the bell.

The Pick: This was a tough call but I like the progress Miami is showing this season and the fact they are at home means they should have enough of an edge to win a close game at the end.  Maybe Boucher becomes a folk hero with his first win.
