Ohio State

The Ohio State Buckeyes are 4-0 and sitting at #2 in the polls. Jim Tressel’s team has looked very good, but they certainly have some things to work on if they are going to have a chance at the national title. The special teams have been awful, which will end up hurting them sometime in a close game if they don’t correct their issues soon.

The Ohio State offense has been quite good under the leadership of Terrelle Pryor. The Buckeyes rank third in the nation with 49.2 points per game. They have a nice balance going so far, as they averaging 240 yards on the ground and 267 through the air. The running back position is stacked with talent, and Brandon Saine is a terrific receiver out of the backfield. The wide receivers have been impressive this year. Both Devier Posey and Dane Sanzenbacher are reliable guys who run impressive routes. The offensive line is very talented, but they still haven’t blocked as well as they can.

The Buckeyes defense has been solid this year, but they were a little put out after giving up 20 points to Eastern Michigan last weekend. Cameron Heyward is the leader of this defense and he said their performance last weekend was unacceptable. The linebackers are as good as you’ll find in the Big Ten, with Homan and Rolle leading the way.

The secondary is pretty good, but injuries are slowing them down a little bit. This is a defense that is extremely opportunistic, so the opposing offense must take good care of the football if they want to have a chance.

Illinois

Ron Zook and the Fighting Illini have started the year at 2-1, but they haven’t had a very tough schedule. This game will be a big measuring stick for this team. Illinois has given Ohio State a lot of trouble in the past, but they are not nearly as talented as this Buckeyes team. Can they rise to the occasion again?

Nathan Scheelhaase is the freshman quarterback for the Illini offense. He is a very mobile quarterback who is still working on his accuracy in the passing game. Scheelhaase threw three interceptions that hurt his team badly in their loss against Missouri. The brightest spot on this offense so far has been Mikel LeShoure. LeShoure is a strong junior running back who is averaging 7 yards per carry and has topped the 100 yard mark in all three games so far this year. The team is going to need a more effective passing game against the better defenses in the Big Ten.

The Fighting Illini defense has fared well against the run this year, but they have struggled against the pass. The rushing defense is allowing just 102 yards per game. The Illini have a strong front four led by star Martez Wilson. Wilson hasn’t been healthy too much in his career, but he is a game changer when he is in the game. The secondary is inexperienced and must improve over the course of the season.

The Pick:

The Illini have beaten the Buckeyes 9 of the last 19 times they have played, but I don’t think they have nearly enough talent to do so this year. Ohio State is one of only four teams in college football to be 4-0 ATS so far this year. I think they’ll make it 5-0 this week. I like the Buckeyes -17.

Ohio State vs. Illinois Score Prediction: Ohio State 34 Illinois 13
