North Carolina State Wolfpack (3-0)

Who are these guys? The North Carolina State Wolfpack have been a surprise on multiple levels this season. For one, few bettors if any saw them tied for the ACC lead after three weeks. Secondly, the ACC has drawn plenty of fire for looking weak in non-conference affairs this season yet the Wolfpack have represented well, beating UCF on the road and taking down Cincinnati last week.

The other surprise has been the stellar play of quarterback Russell Wilson. He’s averaging 248 passing yards per game with eight touchdown throws versus no picks. Wilson has made the offense go and would be a frontrunner if the Heisman Trophy was awarded in September. I expect he and N.C. State to come back to Earth soon enough but Wilson’s performance has been inspiring. The Wolfpack have also gotten a solid contribution from the two-headed monster of Mustafa Greene and Dean Haynes on the ground.

Though it seems that no team can stop Georgia Tech on the ground, it helps that N.C. State hasn’t allowed a 100-yard rusher yet. That at least means they shouldn’t be a total lollipop matchup for Georgia Tech. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (2-1)

There’s nothing like watching the Yellow Jackets run that triple option, is there? They were up to their usual tricks last week against North Carolina, netting 372 rushing yards. Josh Nesbitt threw only four passes in the entire game, completing three of them and connecting for a touchdown.

It was nice to see Georgia Tech rebound on the road after its mail-in job against Kansas the week prior. But it’s worth noting that the North Carolina was missing almost all its key defensive regulars as a result of the NCAA probe. Also, T.J. Yates was sharp against the Yellow Jackets’ pass defense, completing 75 per cent of his throws.

Georgia Tech should deploy its usual strategy this week at home but will have to be sharper against a healthy, confident N.C. State team.

The pick:

I expect plenty of offense here. Georgia Tech can run on anyone; even though the Wolfpack have been solid defensively so far, there’s no comparison between their early-season competition and the Triple Option Show. I actually think the Wolfpack will surprise with their own offensive output – but it still won’t be enough to cover the spread. Georgia Tech has beaten four straight spreads against N.C. State, though the teams haven’t met since 2006.
