In typical Trojan fashion, No. 20 USC has remained in the top 25 rankings while shedding the trauma of its past offseason recklessness, by starting its 2010 campaign with a perfect 3-0 record.

Most had written the Trojans off after the departure of heralded head coach Pete Carroll flew the coop to fly with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks — enter Lane Kiffin and Co. Not well liked by many, including myself, for being an obnoxious, well you know, but you have to admit, Kiffin’s offensive seems to be working.

The Trojans are averaging a little more than 30-points per game. However, the one area that still remains questionable is the offensive line that appears to be better suited for run blocking than pass protection, as the Trojans are averaging 5.6 yards per rush but allowing four sacks through three games and grabbing just 236 yards passing per game.

They are going to need to allow QB Matt Barkley more time to thread the patchwork and get the USC air assault humming, and this weekend’s visit to the Washington State Cougars will give them a golden opportunity. The Trojans have won nine of their last 10 trips to Pullman, including a 69-0 rout two years ago.

Despite coming off a 32-21 win at Minnesota last Saturday, it was the second straight week that Barkley’s passing yardage declined, as he finished with just 192 yards, two touchdowns and several hurried throws for his first two interceptions of the season.

In the meantime, the Cougars have lost 11 straight games against FBS schools and have yielded a conference-high 122 points, while its 2.8 yards-per-carry is the worst in the Pac-10.

WSU has numerous problems along the line of scrimmage, and it showed in Saturday’s loss to SMU, as they allowed QB Jeff Tuel to be sacked four times, adding to their league high total of 10.

Ironically, Washington State’s 11-game FBS losing streak started with a 27-6 loss at USC last Sept. 26. Barkley threw for 247 yards and two TDs to earn his first Pac-10 win, while Tuel made his collegiate debut and was sacked four times in the contest. You’re getting the picture right?

USC fan or not, you have to admit the Trojans decision to pay hard despite its ineligibility for a bowl or to claim the Pac-10 title this year, deserves a lot of respect. In fact it may make them more dangerous to those teams that may have ignored their ability to derail them on their way to glory, something that is not included in its NCAA sanctions.

Put your money on the boys from Troy in this one if you’re looking for the SU win, but if you want to play the spread, I think -22 is being kind as I predict a serious blowout in Pullman.
