Al Golden is a rising star in the coaching ranks because of the amazing job he has done turning around this Temple football program. Just a few years ago they were the laughing stock of college football. Last year they made it to a bowl game and they appear plenty good enough to reach a bowl again in 2010. Golden will face his mentor, Joe Paterno, in this matchup in Happy Valley.
Chester Stewart is the signal caller for this Temple offense. Stewart has done a brilliant job of taking care of the football so far this year, as he has no interceptions through three games. Golden generally doesn’t ask Stewart to do a lot, but his game management is crucial to this team’s success. Bernard Pierce is the real workhorse in the backfield for Temple. Last week against UConn, Pierce ran for 169 yards on 26 carries. This is an offense that likes to control the ball, but they won’t run up a lot of points.
The Temple defense is the biggest reason they have improved so much as a team. The defense has a lot of athletes that can swarm to the football. The defensive line is strong and does a very good job stuffing the run. Elijah Joseph and Amara Kamara are very good at the linebacker position, and Jaiquawn Jarrett is a terrific leader at the free safety spot.
This Temple defense is very solid.
Penn State
Joe Paterno’s Nittany Lions have started the season 2-1, but there are quite a few questions marks surrounding this team. The defense looks solid as always, but the offense just hasn’t performed that well.
The Nittany Lions offense is being led by true freshman Robert Bolden. Bolden has shown flashes of brilliance, but has also been understandably inconsistent so far this season. The most problematic thing for this offense is the lack of production they have been receiving from the running game and Evan Royster. Royster has only 110 yards through three games. The offensive line just doesn’t appear to be nearly as stout as it has been in the past few years. If the running game doesn’t improve for Penn State, they will likely struggle against the best in the Big Ten this year.
The Penn State defense is missing some key players from last year, especially at the linebacker position, but they appear to be very solid again. They pitched a shutout against Kent State last weekend, and they didn’t fare too badly against the top ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. The defensive front four for the Nittany Lions is terrific, and they’ve done great so far this year. The opposition is likely to struggle to run the football consistently against a defensive unit like this one.
The Pick:
The strength of both of these teams is their defense. Both teams want to run the ball, but both defenses are solid in their run defense. I expect a hard fought battle between these two and I think the under is the best play on the board here.
