FIU Golden Panthers vs. Maryland Terrapins Preview

On an early Saturday afternoon non-conference match up the Maryland Terrapins (2-1) host the Florida International Golden Panthers (0-2). College football lines have Maryland as a 12-point favorite in this game with a total of 45.

Maryland suffered their first loss of the season in their last game after winning their first 2 games. They did beat a solid Navy team in their season opener and then played a cream puff team before losing to, then, 17th ranked West Virginia last week. The Terrapins have a legit shot to get to a bowl game this season, as even though they play in the ACC they only face one team this season that is currently ranked in the top 25.

Florida International has yet to win a game this season, but they are not a weak team. They have lost both of their games by a total of 12 points and they were against the solid teams of Rutgers and Texas A&M. The Panthers only went 3-9 last season, but they are better this season and are poised to make a run at the Sun Belt Conference title.

The Panthers have a solid defense ranking 28th in the nation and they are especially strong defending the pass. They forced Texas A&M into 5 turnovers and Maryland has to take care of the ball in this game and not take FIU for granted.

In their last games Maryland lost to West Virginia 31-17 and Florida International lost to Texas A&M 27-20.

Heading into this game Maryland is 1-1 ATS and Florida International is 2-0 ATS.

Maryland looks to forget their 2-10 finish last season and they can enter ACC play at 3-1 if they can beat a pesky Florida International team.

Maryland does not rank in the top 100 in the nation in passing offense and they rank 59th in rushing offense, but in the loss to West Virginia last week they had -10 rushing yards. The Terps do not pass the ball often and that may not be a bad thing since the FIU pass defense ranks 20th in the nation.

The Maryland offense is led by QB Jamarr Robinson, who was 13/24 for 227 yards and 2 TD in the loss to West Virginia. His WR corps is decent at best, but if he can connect with his targets and have a good game Maryland will be tough to beat.

Maryland RB Davin Meggett leads the rushing attack, but last week he only had 30 yards averaging 3.3 yards per carry. He may have to carry the Terps on offense since their passing offense is mediocre at best. The FIU rushing defense that ranks 57th in the nation and last week gave up 206 yards on the ground in the loss to Texas A&M last week.

Florida International does not rank in the top 70 in the nation in either passing or rushing offense, but they have played good teams. The Panthers are led on offense by QB Wesley Carroll, who was 14/33 for 117 yards and 0 TD and 1 INT in the loss to Texas A&M.

The Panthers only have the nation’s 99th ranked pass offense and they will likely not pick up many yards in the air against a Maryland pass defense that is legit ranking 9th in the nation.

For FIU to pull off the upset RB Jeremiah Harden may have to have a big game on the ground. In the loss to Texas A&M he only rushed for 57 yards averaging 2.7 yards per carry. He may need some help in the backfield by freshman RB Kedrick Rhodes, who had his first 2 carries in the loss last week, but he did have 41 yards on those 2 carries.

Harden and Rhodes will be facing a weak Maryland rushing defense, which only ranks 109th in the nation and last week against West Virginia gave up 201 rushing yards. If the Terps can stop the run they will easily win this game, but they have not done that this season and that is a major concern heading into this non-conference game.

FIU is not a bad team and they have played 2 solid opponents this season, but Maryland is at home and they will run the ball well in this game. The Terps will move to 3-1 on the season beating FIU and covering the spread.

Trends:

Florida International is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as a road underdog, and has an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.
Maryland is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games, and has an Under record of 6-1 in their last 7 games.

Pick: Maryland -12

Jason did OK last week going 4-4 for the week in the college game and while he has yet to be below .500 for any of the 3 weeks he wishes the Redskins could have played some D against the Texans in losing their first game of the season to the Lone Star State.
