For those that thought the Wildcats No. 24 ranking was open for discussion, think again as all conversations have ceased since their 34-27 win over 9th ranked Iowa on Saturday.

While I agree that it was an ugly win, the Wildcats could have well posted its season defining victory, while quelling the critics and solidifying their bid for the PAC-10 crown.

Leading 27-7 at the half, the ‘Cats defense faded allowing the Hawkeyes to climb back into it tying the game at 27 midway through the fourth quarter.

Arizona, though, responded with a winning nine-play drive that culminated in a William Wright 4-yard touchdown pass from QB Nick Foles with four minutes remaining.

Foles completed 28-of-39 passes for 303 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick for the Wildcats, who dominated Toledo and The Citadel over the first two weeks of non-conference action, scoring an average of 46.5 points per game.

In contrast, Cal suffered its first defeat of the season losing to the Nevada Wolf Pack 52-31 in their last outing.

While the Wolf Pack’s win was not very surprising, the 21 point deficit that the Bears lost by was.

The Cal defense entered the game leading the nation in fewest yards allowed; averaging 161 per game, but Nevada had 297 by the half and ended their tilt three yards shy of 500.

However, the most troubling statistic was the 502 yards Cal put up, which really illustrated the team’s defensive debacle, as that kind of offensive production should have secured a win for sure.

Cal senior QB Kevin Riley was 23-of-37 passing for 277 yards and a touchdown, but was picked off three times, including one that was returned 65 yards for a touchdown. Now he will face a 7th ranked Arizona defense that is yielding just 62 passing yards per game, so finding open passing lanes and avoiding the picks will be challenging.

The Bear’s will likely be forced to the ground game early, and will look to tail back Shane Vereen to help shoulder the load.  The junior has six TDs and has rushed for 324 yards on 48 carries so far this season.

Arizona’s rushing game is not as effective and is led by senior Nic Grigsby who has just 187 yards on 22 carries and five TDs. A staunch Iowa defense held Grigsby to just 27 yards on 14 carries Saturday night, and held him out of the end zone for the first time in the 2010 season.

Despite the ‘Cats struggles with the run and their defensive miscues their last time out against Iowa, I still think Foles and Company can  avenge last season loss to Cal in Tucson come Saturday.
