The Falcons of Bowling Green enter this game at 1-2 on the season. Bowling Green lost a lot of talent on offense from last year’s team, but they have been fairly competitive so far this year. Last week’s 44-28 win over Marshall was a surprise, and the coaches are hoping it will help the confidence of this team.
The Bowling Green offense is in a bit of limbo this week as it appears starting quarterback Matt Schilz will be out of this weekend’s game. Aaron Pankratz is most likely to be the starter, and he is extremely inexperienced. Going into the Big House in Ann Arbor with an inexperienced starter is always a tough task. The rushing offense has struggled mightily all year, but they’ll need to do something in this game to take the pressure of the young quarterback. Willie Geter will get plenty of opportunity to carry the ball, but this line and the running attack just don’t seem ready to carry the load.
The Falcons defense has been worse than the offense so far this year. Bowling Green allowed 546 yards at Tulsa and they have been burned by long gains several times this year. The defense isn’t very deep, and they appear to be lacking when it comes to speed.
The fact that they are a little slow to the ball could be a huge problem when facing Denard Robinson and this Michigan offense.
Michigan
Michigan survived a scare from Massachusetts last weekend in Ann Arbor, but Rich Rod and the team are now 3-0. Denard Robinson leads all of college football in total yards gained, and some are starting to say he could be a Heisman candidate this season.
The Michigan offense has been firing on all cylinders through the first three games of the year, thanks in large part to the amazing play of Robinson. Robinson’s 502 yards from scrimmage against Notre Dame was one of the most amazing individual feats we will see in college football all year long. The Michigan wide receivers are also a terrific unit. Roundtree, Stonum, Hemingway, and Odoms give the Wolverines the deepest group of receivers in the Big Ten. Michael Shaw appears to be stepping up a little at the running back spot, but this team needs a little more consistency from him.
The Michigan defense looked pretty solid the first couple of games, but they reverted to their old ways last week. The Wolverines defense allowed 439 yards against UMass and gave up 37 points. The defense lacks a real leader and they are a bit weak on the front line as well as the secondary. They may not be tested too much against Bowling Green, but this is the unit that will determine how far Michigan can go in 2010.
The Pick:
I think it is pretty likely that Michigan will bounce back from last week’s scare and take it to the Falcons. Bowling Green’s offense is very inexperienced and their defense is not athletic enough to keep up with Michigan. I think Michigan wins this by more than 25 points.
