Eastern Michigan’s football program has been in absolute disarray for the last few years. The team has lost 15 straight games and 30 of their last 35 games. Ron English was hired to come in and turn this program around, but it will certainly take some time.
Alex Gillett is the primary quarterback for the Eagles offense. Eastern Michigan has been able to move the ball through the air fairly well this season, but they have virtually no running game to help keep defenses honest. Gillett is a mobile quarterback and he can scramble for some yardage, but this offensive line really struggles to keep the defense out of the backfield. Ohio State’s defensive line is about as big as they come, and it is hard to imagine the Eagles offensive line being effective this Saturday.
The Eagles defense has struggled mightily this season, especially when it comes to stopping the run. Central Michigan ran up 269 yards of rushing offense last week, and Eastern Michigan’s front seven was beaten badly all throughout the game. They have yet to face a prolific passing attack, but the secondary is quite weak as well.
This defense will struggle to stop hardly anyone this year.
Ohio State
The Buckeyes have started 3-0 and overall they look like a very good team in 2010. The special teams units have a ton of work to do if they are going to keep their hopes of a championship alive. The Buckeyes have taken great care of the football so far this year, which has helped them immensely.
The Buckeyes offense is guided by Heisman hopeful Terrelle Pryor. Pryor is still developing as a passer, but he is an amazing runner and play maker for the Buckeyes. Pryor had 16 straight completions at one point in last week’s win over Ohio, but he also threw his first two interceptions of the year. The Buckeyes ground game has been decent, but they can certainly improve. Brandon Saine and Boom Herron have been slowed down a bit in the last couple weeks, and the offensive line hasn’t been too terrific in their run blocking. This should be a good chance for them to dominate the line of scrimmage.
The Buckeyes defense is once again one of the best in the nation. Ross Homan leads the team in tackling and Cameron Heyward is an absolute beast at the defensive end position. The Buckeyes defense swarms to the football every single play and it is very tough to run around the outside against a defense with this kind of speed. The secondary is a little dinged up right now and the safety position is probably their weak spot, but even at that position there is quite a bit of young talent.
The Pick:
The Buckeyes and Jim Tressel are not one to run up the score like many other teams, but even with the backups in they’ll probably rack up a lot of points against Eastern Michigan. This game will get ugly in a hurry. I think the over is probably the best play in this one.
