Last year’s reigning PAC-10 Champs haven’t missed a beat beginning their 2010 campaign with three dominating non-conference wins in which they have obliterate their opponents outscoring them 189-13.

Oregon ranks No. 1 in the nation in total and scoring defense, and total scoring offense, but not all is perfect as the Ducks rank No. 2 in the nation in rushing offense, averaging a meager 380.67 yards per game. Surely, I jest.

However, their trio of wins has come at the expense of less formidable programs with the exception of Tennessee who fell on their home turf losing 49-13, scoring the only touchdown the Ducks’ defense has surrendered this season.

Now No.5 Oregon could have their hands full with a Sun Devils team that nearly pulled off an upset at No. 11 Wisconsin on Saturday.

Arizona will by far be the toughest defensive squad that the Ducks has faced this far in the season, holding their opponents to just 61 yards rushing and 189 passing per game.

The Ducks will bring their multi-faceted attack that will include a healthy dose of sophomore running back LaMichael James and new starting quarterback Darron Thomas who completed 9 of 18 passes for 140 yards and a career-high four scores against Portland State in his last outing. James contributed a career-best 227 yards and two touchdowns as Oregon amassed a school-record 528 yards on the ground.

Likewise, the Sun Devils also boast a healthy offensive attack, led by QB Steven Threet who is second in the conference with 280 yards passing per game and has a total of 841 yards and five TDs in three starts. The junior led the Devils up-tempo spread offense completing 21-of-33 passing for 211 yards as Arizona State fell victim to a missed extra-point attempt in a one-point loss to Wisconsin on the road in Madison on Saturday.

In the teams’ last meeting, Oregon routed the Sun Devils 44-21 in 2009, but the offense the Ducks will face on Saturday is a far more talented and the defense is much more stout than a year ago.

If you’re looking for a key matchup in this one, then go with Devils linebacker Vontaze Burfict vs. the Ducks LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner –who has been listed as day-to-day. Burfict stepped up his game at Wisconsin and became a force so look for more this weekend.

Oregon will be bringing its PlayStation-esque numbers to Arizona State on Saturday, and while I like the Sun Devils chances of keeping this game close, the Ducks have way too much firepower.
