The Crimson Tide have certainly looked the part of the #1 team in the country so far, but this will be their toughest test of the season by far. Can Alabama go into a hostile environment and beat an up and coming team like Arkansas? This will tell us a lot about Alabama’s chances in 2010.

The Alabama offense is absolutely stacked with talent. Mark Ingram is back and he had over 100 yards rushing in the first quarter alone last week. Trent Richardson is a tremendous athlete that gives them a terrific pass catcher out of the backfield as well. Julio Jones leads a solid group of wide receivers. Greg McElroy has matured as a quarterback and Nick Saban is trusting him quite a bit more this year. It is extremely tough to find a weak spot on this offense, and I definitely believe this Alabama offense is much better than it was a year ago when they won the BCS National Championship.

The Crimson Tide defense has only two starters back from a year ago and they are a little bit more of a question mark. Despite their inexperience, this is a unit with more raw skills than almost any other defense in the nation. Mark Barron is a great leader at the safety position and Dont’a Hightower is a terrific linebacker that roams all over the field. The cornerbacks are unproven so far, and they will be tested in a big way against Ryan Mallett and this aerial attack of Arkansas.

Arkansas

The Arkansas Razorbacks have made their way up to #11 in the country after an impressive victory at Georgia last weekend. Bobby Petrino’s team is extremely dangerous and they are going to be pumped for this chance to knock off the top ranked team in the nation.

Ryan Mallett is the leader of this Razorbacks offense, and he is absolutely one of the best in the nation at the quarterback position. Mallett is almost 6’7 and has what may be the strongest arm in all of college football. The wide receiver trio of Adams, Wright, and Childs is probably the best in the SEC.

The running game hasn’t gotten going the way they’d like yet, but they have plenty of talent in the backfield to keep a team honest. I believe this offense has enough firepower to finish in the top five in the country in total offense this year.

The Arkansas defense ranked last in the SEC in 2009, but they do seem to be better in 2010.

This is a defense that tends to get beat by the big play pretty often, which they must cut down on if they hope to beat a team like Alabama and contend for the SEC crown. So far the defense is second in the SEC, but that will be tested in a big way this weekend.

The biggest reason for this team’s improvement on defense is the pressure they are putting on the quarterback. Arkansas has 12 sacks already through just three games.

The Pick:

This is the game of the weekend in college football. Arkansas and their offense should be able to put up quite a few points against an inexperienced Crimson Tide secondary, but Alabama will also be able to run the ball very well.

I think it will be tight the whole way, and I think the over is the best play on the board here.

Alabama vs. Arkansas Score Prediction: Alabama 34 Arkansas 28
