No. 9 Nebraska (3-0) vs Wyoming (3-0) Gambling Preview + Predictions

Nebraska may be ranked number nine in the country, but they definitely haven’t played up to their potential so far this season. Wyoming is coming off a big win at Bowling Green last weekend, and the Cowboys are 3-0 right now as well.

It isn’t often that Wyoming gets to host a big name like Nebraska. Jonah Field is more than 7,000 feet about sea level, which makes it the stadium at the highest elevation in all of college football.

Will Nebraska get it going here or will Wyoming shock the world?

Nebraska’s offense is awfully one-dimensional, but they sure can run the football well. Taylor Martinez is one of the most athletic quarterbacks in the country. Martinez leads the team in both rushing yards and passing yards. He has six rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns in 2011. Martinez is averaging a staggering 7.5 yards per carry this year. Rex Burkhead is a talented tailback for the Cornhuskers. Only two Cornhuskers have four or more catches after three games, so it is clear Nebraska relies on the run game very heavily.

The Nebraska defense was supposed to be one of the best in the nation this year, but it has been a huge disappointment so far this season. Most people thought this would be a top ten defense, but right now they rank 68th in the nation in total defense. Jared Crick is a beast at the defensive tackle spot, but he is listed as questionable for Saturday’s game due to an undisclosed injury. Nebraska gave up 29 points to Fresno State two weeks ago. They gave up 38 points to Washington last weekend.

Wyoming actually won last week at Bowling Green as a 9.5 point underdog. Wyoming won that game 28-27 because they blocked two kicks, one of which was the extra-point attempt by Bowling Green to tie the game with no time remaining on the clock. The team will look to keep the momentum going in what many are billing the biggest home game in team history. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Brett Smith has been terrific as the new quarterback for Wyoming this season. Smith is a freshman quarterback who has absolutely burst onto the scene. Everyone knew he had a lot of talent, but not many people expected him to be impressive right off the bat. Last year the Wyoming pass offense was close to non-existent, but they are averaging 266 yards per game through the air this year. The Cowboys are averaging 492 yards of total offense each game, which is 16th best in the nation. Wyoming has three receivers with at least 12 catches already this year. The running game is led by Ghaali Muhammad and Brandon Miller. Defensively, Wyoming has quite a bit of room for improvement.

I don’t expect the Wyoming defense to be able to stop Nebraska’s powerful rushing attack. At the same time, Brett Smith and the Cowboys will likely be able to move the ball pretty well on Nebraska. I think this game ends as a high scoring affair.
